How do you define importance in this thread? For example, LA gets more international tourists and it has Hollywood and Aerospace stuff, but some of the financial stuff that goes on in Chicago is felt all over the world (i.e. the CBOE). DC is the home of the federal government while SF and Boston also have strong financial sectors just like Chicago. Houston now has energy stuff. You could say they're all pretty important

It's either DC, LA, or NYC, Chicago is out of the running.

NYC isn't even up for discussion because this is a poll discussing number two US cities. Here this may help you:

Yeah and DC doesn't touch LA on virtually all metrics and needs all of Baltimore to go toe to toe with Chicago.

Yeah, everyone knows the world's largest options market that pretty much touches most major business around the globe and one of the largest stock markets in the world isn't important at all. Not to mention the CSA with the 3rd most Fortune 500 HQs behind SF and NYC.

Anybody who's not a complete dunderhead would know that every city in the poll is very important to America.

What I'm saying is DC could definitively make a case for #1, which would bring NYC to #2, LA to #3.

DC as an MSA on most metrics stands toe to toe with Chicago. DC-Baltimore CSA (still 400,000 smaller) on most metrics blows Chicago out the water. Chicago does not pack the same punch that DC does for it's size.

IMO it is a tie between DC, LA, and Chicago and I would give an advantage to LA and Chicago because DC is riding off the Government and that is really all the city has to show for.
Wrong. DC as an MSA also has a very strong Biotech/ Life sciences industry in fact stronger than anything Chicago is known for. Stop stripping credit for stereotypes and give it where it's due.

DC is great for biotech but let's not get ahead of ourselves. It's not #1 for biotech. San Francisco and the bay area is still ahead of it for that and so is the Boston area. Top 5 though, for sure. DC's biotech industry is not as well known as Chicago's financial industry in the end. I work in the tech field and if you mention biotech, DC is not the very first area to come to mind.
