Nothing bigger in the 80's than luther, nothing bigger in the nineties than mary or mariah, and nothing bigger in the 2000's than alicia. So how does philly or any city win over new york

Destiny Child's and TLC were big in 90s (Two of biggest selling Female musical groups in history). Beyonce and Alicia Keys were both big in 2000; However, I take Alicia Keys over Beyonce.

There is a "notion,"that blacks down South, are "slow".I have encountered it repeatedly throughout my travels. Its only that bad in the Northeast. Not so out west or midwest. Even my cousins act that way. They would come down here and always talk about what was better up North.

We have kinda tip-toed around it but everyone knows its true. That this is a real issue. It has little to do with the crap that truly is coming out the music scene.
Exactly. The times I've been in the North, I tell them I'm from Memphis and they either say "cool", and mention Three 6/Ball & G/Playa Fly, or they bring up this "country" stuff and mock the accents, and my accent is very mild.

Beyonce caters to the audience, Alicia Keys keeps it real.

I prefer Mary J over Mariah, Mariah (she was good in her prime) was just another Beyonce to me. Both very talented, but one was just too commercialized.

Also we can't forget the talented, Whitney Houston (Newark,NJ).

That's why I say they are both big, but Beyonce's albums sells are average. Alicia Keys outsells her.

Bigger doesn't mean better, and I'm positive that Philly has put out more quality acts than NYC on the R&B side. FYI- nothing bigger than Michael Jackson in the 80s.... and MJ was mos def. R&B until after 'Off the Wall' and even some of 'Thriller'

In 2009 every city is pretty much equal to me in terms of R&B, they all have good singers.
