The state though....every single night on the news is a new mayor, university, state official or whatever going to prison. It's just accepted and anticipated here.
Judging by the user name, you are probably a Chicago native. I just want to hear a prospective from a native of Illinois. Why does Illinois have corruption issues?

New Jersey is by far the #1 most corrupt state, followed closely by Illinois.

I have lived in both Florida and Pennsylvania. The cities of Philadelphia and Pittston. Pa. were/are hot beds for organized crime and parts of the state definitely have some "cronyism". But Florida is easily just as bad; "cronyism" here to is also a large part of the political machinery. Also DEVELOPERS "run" the state and it's economy to a large extent(tourism rules though) many politicians own or rent out real estate and are also involved in various real estate ventures. The state's economy is overly focused on growth , subsequently many politician's are "in the developers' pockets, contributing to an aura of corruption. IMHO.

I don't know if you could say NY ranks among the most corrupt (it's not like IL or NJ, that's for sure). It does however have the stupidest and most dysfunctional government, like Monty Python almost.

The government in Albany is so do-nothing, the whole state of 18 million people pretty much runs on the power of its own inertia. You could nuke the capital and the next day the state would just keep running like nothing had happened. It's not like we don't have lots of practice at getting thru life without a functioning legislature.

The real corruption in NY is at the town level. Some of the rural town justices run their little fiefs like Nero or Caligula. Sherriff Buford in the South has nothing on some of these people.

Illinois is by far the most corrupt state. They have been using and screwing their own citizens for years. Chicago has only prospered because of the swindlers that made it big. The rest of the state has suffered dearly.

New Jersey isn't so much corrupt as it is just a favorite target of people to bash. Everyone always wants to knock the top dog because they're jealous.
