- Long Beach Unified School District serving Long Beach, CA is a good school district for serving an urban city area. It got the Broad Prize for Urban Education in 2003 and was a finalist for the award again in 2008 and 2007. Test scores and such are very respectable for a school district where 69% of the students have parents with incomes low enough for free or reduced lunch.

NYC I'm guessing is probably the biggest, but where else?
Virginia Beach. Not exactly a major city per se but is the most populated city in Virginia. Virginia Beach has an excellent public school system when compared to most major cities.

Louisville. It has some good public schools. If it would only dump its stupid busing program.

Charlotte and Raleigh i've heard are pretty decent.

Louisville's busing program is voluntary too.

Buffalo has some good schools like City Honors High, which is one of the best public schools in the country. Hutchinson Central Technical High is good too. The Olmsted Schools a re good. DiVinci High, an arts school is good too. There are some other good schools in the Buffalo Public SD. Buffalo City Schools

I believe that Pittsburgh has some good schools too. For a smaller city, Utica NY has good schools. Actually, it's most impoverished elementary school is their best in terms of tests scores.
