All of those photos are correct.
However, unless you have lots of money to spend to live on the hilly west side, or central, you'll be seeing a lot more of the freeway traffic scenes, strip-malls, etc than you might think. The things people usually knock the other Texas cities on -- sprawl, strip malls, car-centric, conservative (gasp!) cookie-cutter suburbs, traffic, intense summer heat -- Austin has all this too.
There has been a terrible drought recently, the lake is really low, and things aren't as green. I suspect those nicer photos were not taken recently.
As far as the comparison to Raleigh... I don't know because I've never been to Raleigh. Sorry. But, I have lived in Austin and think it's a great college town, but a little overrated aside from that.
This was posted in the Austin forum... things were getting crazy, developers building super expensive housing, now a few of the developments are in foreclosure... people are worried about the overpriced condos in downtown as well... Austin probably had more of a "bubble" than the rest of Texas. Two area real estate projects in financial trouble - Austin Business Journal:
The lake isn't that low. I was in Austin last month, there is a drought, but things aren't TOO bad out there.
Location: The land of sugar... previously Houston and Austin

Well, there's more than one lake, but --

Looked to me like one near the airport. But, I could be wrong...
Go visit both and make up your own mind. There are lots of similarities and some diffrences. Only you can decide for yourself.
Austin is the only place I'd live in Texas but I'd still prefer to stay in Raleigh.
Good luck with you decision.
It's a neighborhood in central Florida, there is nothing like that in Austin (at least with all the red roofs! that should be a dead giveaway it's not Austin) But just right-click on the image and select "properties", and you'll see where it came from.
Funny that when the poster wanted to demonstrate that Austin had urban sprawl, he had to use an image from Florida...

I drove through Raleigh, it seemed like a nice city. A close friend of mine just moved there, he loves it. He says it's clean and refreshing. I would choose Austin, it seems to have more opportunities and more things going for it.

Town Lake is a constant water level lake - or at least they try to keep it constant. I was in Austin on Monday, and it looked pretty normal. I was also up 71 a bit on Monday, and Lake Travis is ridiculously, crazily, amazingly low.
But the word is that heavy rains are expected in the El Nino event this fall...so it should fill back up. Who knows.
I live in Houston. I've visited Austin many times. I visited Raleigh-Durham once, just barely. I vote Austin mainly for ignorance about Raleigh-Durham, but can confirm that Austin is very unique and would be a really fun place to live, ESPECIALLY for a young Italian guy - if you are moderately decent looking Italian lad, btw, expect to have a really really really good time in Austin (though you could probably say this about Raleigh...sorry if this offends anyone, but its true).
And I'd say UT-love has got to be as strong in Austin as Duke/UNC fanatacism is in Raleigh.
