In Los Angeles, from the Valley, to East L.A., to South L.A., and even a few parts of the Westside (recent article about gang injunction, arrests in Venice b/c of drugs), gangs exist. Obviously, some parts are much, much worse than others, and in other areas they're barely noticeable, but the culture and mindset still lingers throughout.
Don't foget the outer counties like Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino. Heck all the way down to San Diego.

I don't know for sure that Houston was all that dangerous back in the 90s but I sure thought it was as a kid because there was this show on our local fox affiliate called City Under Siege. Watching that show made me feel like I was living in a war zone.

Houston was that dangerous. It had one of the highest murder rates in the 90's. I believe it was 1991 when it had 601 homicides. But it's peak was in 1979 with 701.

Man 701?! I never knew Houston went that high! And that had to have been way before it had as sizable a population as it has now. I knew it always had a crazy crime rate, but I didn't know it was that bad back then. That's crazy.

Ah, I see. Thanks. That makes it sound a little more gang-like.

Yeah I'd read that before too about Illinois and it doesn't surprise me. Though I'm not sure if it would still hold true if SoCal or LA's metro were their own state.

This is probably true too. Though don't forget East St. Louis is in Illinois as well, and it must have a decent number in itself to add to that total.

Oh yeah. It was the murder capital at that time from what I read.
