Street cars are not and would not be in these two cities for commutes to work. They are more for tourists (or locals acting like tourists) and for people to get into a certain area (typically entertainment, museums, attractions) by avoiding traffic, parking, etc.

Many of our family members rode both streetcars and buses. I really enjoyed riding on them The routes covered so much of the city of St. Louis and you could actually start going one way and make a trip back to were you began. Had to be careful tho', sometimes the conductor would tell my cousins and I that we couldn't transfer to that particular bus or streetcar. Then we would have to pay an additional nickel.

With all of these routes....you could go just about anywhere:
