Colleges have a pretty outsized presence in Providence RI:
These schools have their main campus in the city with the first three located right in the downtown area:

Brown gives the city an elite academic vibe. RISD give it an artsy edge. JWU and its acclaimed culinary arts program creates a great food scene. Their downtown locations make the city feel like a college town.
I would say the big power college cities are going to be New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Boston. Most major cities have a number of colleges and universities, even if they are small. But across the Northeast and Midwest there are smaller midsize cities that actually have large universities over some man or cities. Like for example Ann Arbor, Michigan has over 65, 000 college students, with two two major universities in the area ( Univ of Michigan, and Eastern Michigan university ). Now compare Ann Arbor against man or cities like Jacksonville or Memphis. Those cities dontbeven have 30,000 college students in their metropolitan areas.
I would say Philly has to be added to any list of power college cities. In city limits you have Penn, Temple, Drexel, Jefferson (Philly U), St. Joes, La Salle, UArts, USciences, Moore, Curtis, Holy Family, Chestnut Hill College. In the immediate area you also have many elite smaller schoos like Villanova, Swarthmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Haverford etc. Many more schools throughout the area. IMO NYC underperforms for its size.
I agree 100% with you. You also cannot forget UCSF which has one of the best medical schools in the US.
Another interresting thing will be if Athens is eventually added to the ATL MSA. I think it is unlikely, but if it did happen Atlanta could definitely make a claim for being in the elite.
Atlanta does belong in the elite.The Atlanta metro has one of the top 10 colleges student populations in the country.It has probably the most diverse collection of colleges and universities in the country

Having multiple smaller ones give you more options and varieties to choose from. Having one huge one creates great publicity and attracts more out of state and country students.

Nashville as wellas some of its educational offerings are well known in the South and among African Americans but not so sure in the larger mainstream population.
Of course Vanderbuilt is recognized but people dont always know where a campus is located .
To some degree but much lesser its the same with Atlanta .The main difference is Atlanta has 2 of the three most well known HBCU(Morehouse and Spelman and the other in DC.is Howard) as well as Georgia Tech and Emory,Both have some of the highest percentages of students from out of the region.
Several other liberal arts schools also have a long history of attracting students from outside of the South.
Oglethorpe and Agnes Scott have very high out of region populations.
This is supported by Census data that shows Atlanta had the highest population from certain states and regions than anywhere the South other than Miami and in some cases even higher than Miami.
One interesting note about Vanderbuilt is that there was a rift between leaders at the school who left who then supported Emory
