I'm going to keep it simple. My favorite ones are the ones I'm familiar with here in GA like Dublin, Georgia and Milledgeville, Georgia

They both can give you the charm of small southern towns, where football friday nights are special, yet at the same time they are not exactly one horse towns and can offer you some of the same things as larger cities (shopping centers, multiple dining options, bars etc.)

The one I live in! Staunton/Waynesboro, VA. Staunton was founded in 1747 and has a very old historically preserved walkable downtown. Has a Shakesphere theater modeled after the Blackfriars playhouse, and is the birthplace of Woodrow Wilson. Ironically was the first place ever to implement the city manager form of government. The Frontier Culture museum is here as well. Waynesboro is getting all the big box stores for shopping. We are also in a beautiful area surrounded by mountains, 30 mins to Charlottesville with all its amenities and 2.5 hrs from DC.
The area serves a population of about 120,000 i believe.

I like Boone, NC a lot -- mountainous college town, lots of wealthy retirees summer in the area so there's money & the amenities that brings, great natural settings if you're into the outdoors, great weather. It's the only micropolitan area I can think of that I'd move to.

Of that list, I pick as tops:

Canon City, CO
Daphne/Fairhope, AL
Hilton Head Island/Beaufort, SC
Thomasville/Lexington, NC
Statesville, NC
The Villages, FL

Then there are some that I would consider "ok":

Silverthorne, CO
LaGrange, GA
Newberry, SC
Shelby, NC
Sevierville, TN

I have to go with UP cities: Iron Mountain, Escanaba, Sault Saint Marie, and Marquette-Ishpeming. Unemployment is high, but everything is average to great. I also like Whitewater,WI.

Here are my favs:

Richmond, IN(also very underrated)
Marquette, MI
Milledgeville, GA
Burlington, IA
LaGrange, GA
Quincy, IL

I'd also like to put DeKalb, IL and Morgantown, WV down, but somehow those don't qualify as micropolitan areas!

Since I initially didn't realize it was classified as a micropolitan area, I'll add Madison, IN. Love their downtown area, the general charm of that town, and their riverfront along the Ohio River. Just the thought of the the Madison Regatta(hydroplane boat races held on the river) held each summer is making me sadly realize it has been too many years since I last went there.

So funny Im not sure if you have been to Lexington in a few years but it has gotten horrible (just the roads and road construction) it can confuse the heck out of someone, and there is so much one ways and turn arounds and construction!! I hate driving through Lexington. . . . .BUT LOVE THE BARBEQUE!!!!

SOme Micro's do have a small urbanized area. Tupelo Miss comes to mind. the city has a mall, shopping, and is pretty nice. It is a 3 county micro with about 50,000 people and the central city has 35,000 of the people.
