This argument is brought up again and again in "L.A. vs ___" threads and it is such a stupid argument to make. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

Miami metro is over 5 mil and LA metro differs between 12.8-17.7 mil based on what boundaries they use. Size should have no bearing though if you are just comparing skylines.

Miami is more impressive and has a nice waterfront setting. I like LA's iconic Library town and the hills/mountains in the background though as well.

LA skyline has grown over the years so give credit were it's due. Right now Miami wins, but LA is planned for construction of tall buildings in a couple of years one could break ground in 2010.

LA skyline it has grown desener over the years.

I haven't been to Miami since 2004 and I was going to say LA. When I was in Miami I always felt its skyline could use a few more buildings but from the recent pictures I've seen, it looks different. One thing however, even though I love Miami, its downtown area has very little to offer. Just about everything is closed after 5 pm. Miami Beach has more of an urban feel and is far more lively.

Thanks to everyone for responding. Good comments (including the above).

I like both LA and Miami, and agree it's tough to beat skylines cast against a waterfront.

That said, I think it's fair to say downtown LA is more of a traditional "downtown" with more historic buildings and varied districts with street activity than DT Miami. But than again this was a "skyline" thread.

LA had a huge growth spurt under then Mayor Tom Bradley (first African-American mayor of a large American city) from the early 1970's to 1990. Then the early 1990's aerospace/real estate bust brought that to a halt.

Miami just had a huge growth binge of its own (similar to LA's growth circa the 1970's/1980's).

Currently, both cities have a lot in the "planning" stages with regards to additional tall buildings for downtown. That said, the economy will dictate what actually happens over the next 3 to 5 years. Stay tuned!!!

I vote for Los Angeles, it has more of a real skyline look, while Miami has more of a resort look similar to Honolulu.

don't get me wrong I do like LA's skyline but it needs to double it's skyline and yes LA's downtown does have a susbstantial amount of older historic buildings which is an asset. I do remember that LA had a height restriction for years due to earthquakes.
Miami just really exploded this decade. In 1999 Miami only had 6 highrises over 500 feet and now it has 27! Which is 5 more than LA currently has.

For people who have seen both skylines in person, I don't see how anyone could think LA's is better. The mountain makes it impressive in pics, but you don't actually seem them when driving past the downtown area. I've been more impressed by Atlanta's skyline than LA's as have some relatives who are from LA and have been to Atlanta.

That is a kick-ass picture of LA, great and impressive. Although I think Miami wins this one, LA is no slouch either.
