States like Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, etc are often lumped in with the Midwest by ignorant Californians. States like Utah do give me a Midwestern vibe, but they're still probably more similar to rural California than to rural Illinois.
Idaho is the most mountainess state in the Lower 48 so definately not Mid West. Idaho has both Rocky Mountain West and Northwest topography within the states boundaries.
Plus Idaho is a popular relocation state for West Coasters.
I don't know any Californians who lump in places like Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, etc with the Midwest..
Many people I knew in California had at least traveled at some time to the Rocky Mountain states--or had family that lived or relocated there. And they aren't really that similar to rural California(except for maybe the eastern or northern regions of the state) or the Midwest although they do share some commonalities. There is sort of an old west/libertarian/new money transplant mix in the Rocky Mountains..The beauty of the region attracts a lot of transplants and tourists to the area--something you can't really say about the Midwest.
