I don't think they have much in common, aside from being US states and being big in both population, physical size, and having a lot of geographic and ethnic diversity within them.
Just remember; the LA area BY ITSELF is larger than Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin COMBINED.
What they have in common is that their American states and have that American culture I guess. I think they are different though. One California, one Texas, one Florida, one Washington, so on. I think some CAers will find this comparison as an insult though...
Well, there's Mexicans for starters. The one common thread weve been able to see between LA and Dallas is that the majority of the residents in each city are hispanic. Not good or bad, just an observation. Makes for delicious food!
I dont think Texans or Californians should feel insulted when people compare the states. Im a native of one and live in the other and Im very fond of both. They are very different and I love them in different ways.
Given LA's sheer size, it hard to really compare it to anywhere else. But given that its one huge population center that people commute to, Houston is set up similarly (obviously they are still very different). San Fran is also one of a kind and its really hard to compare to anywhere else. But given that the Bay Area more fragmented than LA and has more population centers (Oakland and San Jose), DFW is similarly set up (yes, again I know they are very different). San Diego and San Antonio and Austin and Sacramento can draw from each other the same way.
Similarly, as much as I think it will bother people, both states have a "do it my way or go to hell attitude" even if the attitudes stand for different things.
Thank God Texas isn't anything like California. Let's keep it that way. *shudder*
Eh, why? There are so many parts to California that it's hard to imagine there not being anywhere in the state that wouldn't be appealing to someone. Plus, California doles out more to the federal government than any other state (in absolute amounts while getting one of the smallest returns on federal spending compared to federal taxes). California's doing a wonderful job supporting the country. Sweet weather, too. Really sweet.

They always shaft the powerhouses, like NYC & NYS but on a larger scale. I feel for Cali.
I don't really see anything in common between California & Texas besides the obvious (very large states, high populations, etc.).
I don't think you'll too many people in either city who would want this comparison.
Californians seem to have a very low opinion of all Texas cities minus Austin and (to a lesser degree) San Antonio.
Dallas and (especially) Houston are hated.
