People think NJians are just like NYers, and that we're all rude, arrogant, and trashy. People like to offensively poke fun at the state as if refineries, ghettos, and highways are in everyone's backyard. People think guidos run rampant throughout the state (when I barely see any). People take the shows "The Sopranos" and "Jersey Shore" too seriously when these shows portray the slightest minority of the state.
While NJ is one of the most educated states you have the "Jerry Springer Americans" who think they have room to talk.

People love to hate NJ.
People just love to hate in general man. Lol, every post I've seen on here (in this thread), I can vouch for everything people have said here, because of what I've seen on City-Data. All of it sounds very accurate.

Pretty much spot-on like how I described it, and I don't know about you, but have you ever gone somewhere outside of New Jersey and someone asks where your from and you say "New Jersey", and they go "I heard it smells there "...smh thats happened to me a couple of times.
Oregon: a bunch of pot smoking, left-wing socialist/communist, hipsters/punks/hippies/anything else outside the social norm. That we drink coffee all day, read, get no sun, and drink micros all night.
Texas: a bunch of conservative hillbillies with horrible accents that walk around saying y'all all the time. Driving around in gas guzzling trucks and suvs, wearing cowboy hats and listening to crappy country music (not the old/good stuff). Also, quite racist towards anyone that is not white or Asian.
I will say that I heard the most racist comment ever when I was in a Home Depot in the Dallas area. Also, I did see a lot of hillbillies in the area as well. I think both stereotypes are pretty accurate when generalizing each area.
Pennsylvania stereotypes: Elderly, behind the times,, backwards, steelworkers, coal miners, unions, mullets, xenophobes, Amish, hostile sports fans in Philadelphia, obese sports fans in Pittsburgh, substandard highway system, all 12.6M people somehow having the exact same mentality.
Another New Jersey stereotype, whenever you aren't in New Jersey and you tell someone your from New Jersey they go "Oh your from New Joizy?" I've never in my life heard anyone in NJ say "New Joizy"
Good topic. Hate there hasn't been more response because I think every state has a stereotype. As for NC, I've seen people post stereotypes of us on this very forum. In general, people see us as backward, redneck, hillbilly, poor, uneducated, conservative, bible thumpers all waiting around for the South to rise again. LOL
I guess I have my own false impressions of other states and I suppose that is merely part of human nature to categorize things in this way. And when people apply stereotypes to my state - well, it used to bother me but now I just shrug it off.

when I think of north carolina, I just think of an old fashioned state, with strong conservative views lol
NY: Everyones always busy, pushy, in your face, cruel, disrespectful, spiteful, violent, sick, mean, nasty, loud, rude, guys are metros, girls are manly, robotic, perfectionists, sophisticated, awkward in a hot, humid, & hazy environment where the sun is blocked out by skyscrapers & black smoke.
Guys = Donald Trump
Girls = Fran Drescher and Remy Ma
NJ: Same as NY but in a dirty dark cloudy industrial sulphur smelling environment.
Guys = Tony Soprano
Girls = Snookie
I'm not sure alotta people think you guys are all that rich anymore. With the budget deficit and everything, isn't the new stereotype it's all kinda falling apart? You know, next Greece and all that type stuff that's current now.
You really hate us, don't you
Anyways, here are some numbers people need to consider when talking about California and how its not really unique to CA of how bad its doing:
US Federal Debt % to GDP: 94.27% in 2010
That's right, ladies and gentlemen. We almost have as much debt as we do money coming in from the federal government.
If you think this is unique to one state, keep dreaming. Its a nation wide problem. In fact, as Greece has shown us, its really a world wide problem
It's really kind of funny, because your state is actually doing worse than my state when it comes to debt:
Worst Debtor states (Bottom 10):
50. Illinois
49. New York
48. Connecticut
47. California
46. New Jersey
45. Louisiana
44. Mississippi
43. Ohio
42. Massachusetts
41. Wisconsin
40. Kentucky
Yet California is the whipping boy in all this. Why?
To be fair though, California is equally represented in all the nation's "worsts" lists:
Top 10 States with the highest rates of foreclosed homes (source: The Latest Updated Foreclosure Rates - RealtyTrac)
1. Nevada
2. Arizona
3. California
4. Florida
5. Idaho
6. Utah
7. Georgia
8. Michigan
9. Colorado
10. Illinois

47. Rhode Island: 12.5%
46. Florida: 12.0%
45. South Carolina: 11.6%
44. Mississippi: 11.5%
43. Illinois: 11.2%
42. Alabama: 11%
41. Ohio: 10.9%
40. North Carolina: 10.8%
Keep in mind, the national unemployment rate is 9.9%
Surprisingly enough, California makes it into the top 10 in terms of American human development. Even I didn't expect that one! Measure of America
US States by Human Development Index
1. Connecticut: .962
tied 2. Massachusetts: .961
New Jersey: .961
4. Maryland: .960
tied 5. Hawaii: .959
New York: .959
tied 7. New Hampshire: .958
Minnesota: .958
Rhode Island: .958
California: .958
Colorado: .958
US state average: .950 (or very high, so don't worry we're not a 3rd world country despite what the naysayers have to say)
We're all on this boat, and we are all sinking relatively speaking. Such is life though.
*Note: I am not advocating for one political ideology over the over concerning national debt.
