Check this out. They made an independent movie about surfers in Cleveland.

OUT OF PLACE: a portrait of surfing in cleveland, ohio (http://outofplacemovie.com/ - broken link)

I have seen people surfing out at Edgewater and in Ashtabula before. Ashtabula actually had a surf shop when I was growing up there

A friend of ours has a brother who moved from SE Michigan to Seattle because he thought life would be so much better there. Within a year, our friend was helping him to move back because he said that the constant gloomy, drizzly, gray days were making him depressed. I guess he found out first hand what having gray skies "all the time" was really like.

I love how people assume that all of the west coast is one big Malibu beach scene.

LOL.

People who say that the Great Lakes region is constantly cold, gray, and gloomy are overlooking those perfect April days when the grass is that perfect springy green, the daffodils are in bloom, and the sun feels warm on your skin. They are overlooking those summer days where the sun sparkles on the lakes and the leafy green maples provide the perfect shade. They are overlooking those spectacular Indian summer days in October when the sky is bluer than blue, the warm breeze with just a hint of chill in it rustles the beautiful autumn leaves, and it's the most perfect walking weather you can imagine.

I'm so glad I don't have to live somewhere where the weather and the scenery never change. Now THAT would be depressing!

Lol a nice, steamy 33 degrees
Hmmm, guess I'll wait a month or so to come up to go to the beach. I think the earliest I've ever gone swimming was mid-May.

Or how about those days when it gets warm in the winter and the sun comes out and melts all the snow. Y'know like today (yet another sunny day so far).
Or even those cold winter days where the air is crisp and the sun is shining.
My tolerance for people that think we don't see any sunshine from Novemeber - March has come to an end. I can't take it anymore.
NEWSFLASH: The sun comes out FREQUENTLY in the winter in Cleveland. Do we have grey days? OF COURSE WE DO. It snows here. Where does snow come from? Clouds. So when it snows it is cloudy.
But this misconception from the many pessimists here that the sun never shines in winter.... idiots.

I've lived in both places and I have to respectfully disagree. San Francisco and the Bay area has one of the best climates in the country. We just spent all of January and half of February in the 60's and some 70's with bright sunshine most days. Fall is usually the warmest time of year when summer extends well into November. Yes, the western half of the city of San Francisco gets a lot of fog, but with microclimates that change from neighborhood to neighborhood, it hardly describes the entire city, or the whole metro area.

I respect your decision to want to move back to Cleveland, but the west (Cali) does not suck at all!

Yes, it's expensive. But it's not for some arbitrary reason. There is a ton of opportunity, people make a lot of money, the weather is pristine, the scenery is absolutely beautiful, and there is so much to do both in the city and recreationally all the time.
