I was on another CD forum and someone living in Ohio mentioned White Castle...and several ex-Ohioans chimed in, and I asked about Manners Big Boy. The OP is in Columbus and says there are still a few Big Boy restaurants...they are not called Manners there though.

Does Manners or the Big Boy still exist anywhere in Cleveland???

The thread sparked such memories I may have to get on an airplane!!

Nope. The chain is long gone as far as I know. Had great kid memories of Manners Big Boy, too, though. The food, esp the Big Boy double-decker hamburger, was delicious and car-hop girls (yes, they were called 'girls' back in the day and they wore uni's -- there were no male car-hops) were a lot of fun, too.

There are a few Big Boy restaurants hanging around in Ohio and are much more prevalent in Michigan. The two in Cleveland that I know of are at Granger and Canal Roads (Valley View) and W. 130th an Brookpark Roads (Cleveland). The "Manners" prefix is a thing of the past, but it's the same place minus the car-hop. My parents go there at least once every few months for the sake of nostalgia.

There is one Big Boy on Granger Road on the east side, and one on Brookpark Road on the west side.

The Big Boy on Som Center Road in Mayfield Hts., across from Eastgate Shopping Center, apparently fell victim to the epidemic.

In Greater Cleveland, the Bob's Big Boy restaurants apparently are franchised.

In the rest of Ohio, including Columbus, Big Boy restaurants are non-franchised and controlled by Frisch's Restaurants.

Yes, I know the Big Boy brand lives on even though Manners is long gone -- usually as Bob's, as you note (and my understanding). We went to Frisch's Big Boy in Cincinnati years ago.. I understand Frich's lives on -- but was hit hard by COIVD and closed, permanently, many franchises.

We used to go to the Manner's at Chagrin & Warrensville Center Rd in Shaker -- where I remember those car-hops. That Manner's building lived on as a Wendy's until just a few years ago, when Wendy's tore it down and built a typically faceless steel 'n glass box -- apparently, they needed reconfiguration for the always-popular drive-thru biz, which the old Manners building, of course, was not designed for... Still, I hated to see it go. We actually went there a decade or so ago and at our Wendy's food inside just to recall the old Manners years... It was a hoot.

It hasn't been "Manners" for... at least 30 years... Just Big Boy. Pretty sure it's all still the same food. Might want to get on that place.

Actually, the Big Boy sandwiches are not the same from one franchisee to the next. My brother has loved Big Boy sandwiches for half a century and now lives in Columbus. He says that the Frisch's version with tartar sauce and dill pickles is closest to the Manner's Big Boy sandwich, but he still believes that Manner's used a sauce that was not exactly tartar sauce. The following article says that Manner's used tartar sauce on its Big Boys, but it's possible that Manner's tartar sauce differed noticeably from the tartar sauce now used at Frisch's.

See "Food" here:

One comment says that this recipe tastes identical to the Manner's sauce.

Other Big Boy sauce recipes include ketchup, which I'm fairly certain wasn't an ingredient in the Manner's sauce.

See the 9/19/16 comment here, where the poster developed a Manner's copycat recipe using the actual ingredients from a jar of Manner's Big Boy sauce. It uses onion and garlic powders rather than real onions.
