On my previous thread I asked if I should move to southern Ohio or northeast Ohio and everyone said northeast, though a few said I should check out Chardon. Is Chardon right for me or should I look elsewhere?

Criteria on what I want in a town:
  • Classic midwest ideals (conservative, family-friendly, and good people) [not a hipster/hippie town]
  • Low crime, doesn't feel run-down (AKA the kind of place where kids can leave their bikes at a bus stop without risking some thugs taking them)
  • Cheap land
  • Easy commute to a big city
  • Some fun things to do in town as well
  • Mild summers and snowy winters
  • Hilly terrain

I don’t live in Chardon but we scouted the area pretty thoroughly earlier this year.

“Yes” to most of your checklist items.

It is not crime free but grades B or B+ depending on which source you use.

“Easy commute” would depend on your definitions of easy, as well as what you consider a big city. It is about 40 minutes to downtown CLE, less than half that to Mentor for big box shopping and such.

There are hills, and Chardon offers one of the best chances for snow in NE OH.

You should also check out Burton and Middlefield while at it. Easy to hit all 3 on a scouting trip. Also in the snow belt. Although Middlefield may feel too rural for your liking.

Land is cheap compared to other locations in the nation, but not as cheap as more rural areas of Ohio.

Use Google maps to check travel times between any two locations.

Chardon has very good retail options for a small town -- Home Depot, Wal-Mart, grocery stores, and more.

See post 3 in your earlier thread for a discussion of winters in Chardon. Don't expect winters like you would find at a western ski resort. Call somebody at Chardon City Hall, or ask when you visit, about typical accumulations. In my youth, there was a lot of snow in Chardon most of the winter, not as much any longer.

You will many events on the Chardon square and in nearby Burton, including one of the best county fairs in Ohio.

Lake County is immediately adjacent to Chardon.

Both Geauga County and Lake County have good county park districts, and Holden Arboretum, one of the best in the U.S., is nearby Chardon. Nearby Punderson State Park is Ohio's designated winter recreation state park. Mentor Headlands Beach state park has the largest natural sand, freshwater surf beach in Ohio.

There's not going to be an easy commute to a big city (Cleveland) from Chardon. I remember reading a story about a newspaper reporter who lived in Chardon, and kept calling off work due to weather. One day when the reporter called off, his boss decided to see for himself, since it was sunny in Cleveland. He was forced to turn back as he approached Chardon. You can't drive, and the buses won't run, under whiteout conditions.

on the lighter side, your desire to be free of hipsters may not be entirely possible. Chardon is home to the famous (or infamous) more-than-a-little hipsterish Chardon Polka Band! I think they're outliers though

Whiteouts, if any, that would prevent a commute from Chardon to Cleveland are very infrequent these days, especially during weekday commuting hours.

Ehhh... Starbucks is everywhere these days, in just about every nondescript suburb, even. I would think hipsters might prefer indie coffee shops.

It could be I don't have the correct definition of "hipster". However, if it is young, educated and having a decent income, sounds like that's the Starbucks definition of their customer.

I make the Yup vs Hipster distinction. Yups are clean cut, vanilla, corporate, white collar types who do everything by the book. Hipsters do not want to be viewed as Yups, but tailor their aesthetics to their own "alternative" groups (very strictly conformist at the same time though).

Imo though, the Hipster era has been over since about 2015. Peak hipsterdom was around 2007-2013ish.

Starbucks now is basically pretty much a default coffee shop. Doesn't really "belong" to anyone. They are everywhere.
