Hello Clevelanders!

Have not spent as much time on the forum in general, as of late, things have been ultra busy.

That said, planning on coming home for a Browns game home weekend next month, along with, of course, visiting with family and friends, doing some hikes, and doing fall things (leaf-peeping, Patterson's Fruit Farm, etc.) With that said! It's been now... 27 months (Yikes! Easily a record ) since my last visit into town, and so as familiar as many things might be, some might be unfamiliar (including, bringing my infant daughter along-though, to be fair, she is relatively a seasoned traveler now given our mountain west expedition this summer... so she should be fine).

Anticipated schedule:
Day 1: Flying in, in the evening (first time doing so from SRQ, normally almost always fly out of TPA, sometimes PIE) Probably staying somewhere right near the airport on this first night.
Day 2: Getting rental, and probably doing some combination of things on this day: Stopping in at b.a. Sweetie, Visiting Bedford Reservation/Tinkers Creek Gorge (I never actually have been there) to do a little hiking, seeing some friends and family, and perhaps Patterson's Fruit Farm and/or Chagrin Falls
Day 3: Morning, maybe grabbing brunch, heading over to Squire's Castle or walking around at Beachwood Mall.. Early Afternoon heading into city, maybe early enough to do a couple hours of walking around various portions of downtown, maybe seeing USS Cod and/or getting inside St. John's Cathedral (I've previously been to Old Stone Church and Trinity), grabbing food, getting in the stadium in plenty of time still.
Day 4: More family time, perhaps stopping in at Children's Museum, grabbing coffee and or lunch somewhere near downtown (possibly stopping in at West Side Market), and then heading to airport for afternoon flight home.

Not a long visit by any stretch, but one that feels much needed and will definitely be a great time. A few Q's:
1. Specifically which trail sections have been finished near downtown over the past year or two? I believe the bridge over to Whiskey Island.. anything else? Red Line Greenway coming along? May check some of this out in lieu of other stops.
2. Any particularly good month of October events or fall festivals that might be good for a family to check out at some point? Obviously, we really don't have a ton of time, period.
3. Sad to hear that Sokolowski's became a victim of the pandemic. Any plans for a reopening? Seems to leave a hole, as we basically went there at least once every time we were in town. Any similarly esteemed Central European style place that would work well in substitute? Balaton, perhaps?
4. Rooftops-on that Sunday when I have a couple hours or so to kill, was considering perhaps heading over to the Rooftop of The 9, or The Hilton prior to the game... that said, are those rooftops still open that late in the season? I don't want to take that for granted.
5. Any other things that an urban enthusiast would particularly want to know about or check out with somewhat limited time back in the city for a few days? The forum seemed to at one point have a really regularly updating thread with all these things in the city that I kept coming back for more of, but it seems to have trailed off some, at least here. Any particularly good blurbs I should follow? I've found several in Tampa Bay, where I am now, so I find myself getting more regular updates about my current area, than home, and definitely would be open to subscribing to any email dailys or websites you recommend.

Thanks all!

What are the dates of your travel? That would impact my recommendations.

Given that Ohio is undergoing a COVID Delta surge that is bad and may worsen in the weeks ahead, I would avoid indoor locations, such as the U.S.S. Cod, St. John's Cathedral and especially the Children's Museum with an unvaccinated infant.

Your daughter would likely most enjoy Lake Metroparks Farmpark, which I believe has undergone some changes.

http://www.lakemetroparks.com/events...mpkin-weekends

Have you ever visited the East Flats Boardwalk? The East Flats might be a good place to have brunch. You likely need reservations.

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainm...flats_boa.html

https://www.yelp.com/biz/punch-bowl-...land-cleveland

I wonder if Alleycat changes its brunch hours on game days? Its outdoor seating offers great views.

https://www.alleycatoysterbar.com/menu

https://www.yelp.com/biz/alley-cat-o...d?osq=Alleycat

The Waterfront Line is closed. So consider if you want to climb out of the Flats with a young daughter. Perhaps park there before relocating for the game.

Have you ever explored the Nord Family Greenway? You could pair it with a walk around the Wade Lagoon.

https://www.yelp.com/search?cflt=bre...ty-cleveland-7

Does Hofbrauhaus change its brunch hours on game days? It has lots of outdoor seating, weather permitting.

https://hofbrauhauscleveland.com/

Your daughter likely would enjoy the Euclid Beach Carousel at the Western Reserve Historical Society Cleveland History Center (but perhaps not the best idea during the Delta surge), the Perkins Wildlife Center at the Cleveland Museum of History, and the free ArtLens Gallery at the Cleveland Museum of Art (make certain it remains open during the Delta surge). The Cleveland Museum of Art may be among the safest places during the COVID epidemic. Many galleries there would fascinate young children, e.g., the armor gallery, sculpture, Asian galleries, etc.

Check Lake View Cemetery for weekend hours at the Garfield Monument. Lake View is an interesting destination for fall colors. If the office is open, check for a map of the location of the horticulture highlights.

Are you staying in Fairport Harbor? Lake Metroparks Lake Erie Bluffs Park has added an observation tower to a beautiful location. It's not as big a climb for an infant as the Emergent Tower at Holden Arboretum. Binoculars are great on any tower. Have you visited Mentor Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve since the trail was upgraded several years ago?

Hello WRnative-thank you for your thoughtful and detailed response-as always. We are arriving in the evening on Friday, October 15th, and departing in the afternoon on Monday, October 18th.

This is a valid point to consider and I appreciate it. I don't monitor delta variant stuff as much in terms of case rates and haven't been as OCD on it since my wife and I got vaccinated. You bring up a fair point, that a museum (like the children's museum) would perhaps be ill-advised since she of course isn't vaccinated (though I guess infant maybe wasn't the best word choice on my part, as she is 15 months now, though of course, still not vaccinated quite yet. As for USS Cod or St. John's.. those I would be most likely to hit Sunday when I am solo or at least, not with my daughter, and if I were, I would definitely mask up throughout time there despite my vaccination. I agree that some caution is in order, esp with an uptick in cases.

She has been mostly kinda young to fully engage with attractions around her, but at the same time, I definitely agree that farm animals, esp now, along with the other stuff there, she might enjoy. We may be coming from the airport on Saturday towards Lake County, and in any case, we will be somewhat in that part of town, so it isn't a bad idea, and is right near Patterson's also.

I have now been in the East Flats I think 3 times since it has opened, though I'm sure there are new attractions since my last and changes. Just to confirm, while I will be with fam the rest of the weekend, I probably will not be down there with them from about Noon to 6-7 PM (leaving game) on Sunday, so carrying her, etc. would not be an issue.

Specific question about the bridge leading over to Whiskey Island, and perhaps also the Superior Viaduct, which I don't believe I have ever been at or up on to catch the view from; where would be best to park for those two? Also, it doesn't look like it would be too bad to cross from West to East (or Vice Versa) at Center Street, but is there a water taxi running at all?

Many interesting links and ideas!
1) Not really sure about Hofbrauhaus or others hours, but game is at 4, so in either case it shouldn't be a big issue. Somewhere I'd consider going for sure.
2) Are Nord Family Greenway and Harrison Dillard Trail one in the same? I've spent minimal time getting out by that trail and taking pictures of 2-3 of the gardens, but as far as real time on those trails.. not a lot, no. Wade Lagoon is always great, of course.
3) I believe you, but is there any particular reason you perceive Clevleand Museum of Art to be safer than say the Children's Museum? Just more space to spread out, better protocol, etc? Our problem is, many of the University Circle institutions are closed on Monday, which is the day that we would be most likely to have time to check them out, based on our route/plans. I would say Saturday and early Sunday would be spent in transit towards Lake County, and perhaps more out that way for a majority of that time at least (excluding the game at 4 on Sunday), and Monday would probably be most likely to be our "urban exploring" day.

Still not quite certain on that yet. May be doing a mixture of family/hotel stays throughout the trip, and not exactly sure where yet, but at least half of our time, and 1 possibly 2 of our nights would be within Lake County in that vicinity. I have been to the observation towers at both Lake Erie Bluffs and Holden Arboretum, but that doesn't all discount them as good options I would consider. I can't say whether I have or haven't yet on the trails where you describe, because, while I've been to Headlands a couple times in the last few years, I am not sure whether I hit where you mentioned. I don't think I've ever been to the Mentor Marsh Boardwalk before, largely because I've been unclear on exactly where it was.

Is your daughter walking yet? She's certainly at the age where she's rapidly becoming aware of the world around her, so I still think she might enjoy the Farmpark, most especially if she is walking and the weather is good. Also, she may mature noticeably in just a couple weeks! Once infants start walking, the change in behavior is startling.

During your visit, the Farmpark will be celebrating Corn & Pumpkins Weekend. There will be a multitude of kids, which always fascinates infants.

Before or after visiting the Farmpark, perhaps you could visit Penitentiary Glen or Holden Arboretum.

Penitentiary Glen Nature Park in Kirtland, Ohio, waterfall | Lake Metroparks

The Bole Woods Trail at Holden should be glorious during fall colors at the time of your visit. It's part of the National Natural Landmark area at Holden.

If you do go to the Cleveland Metroparks North Chagrin Reservation, the A.B. Williams Memorial Woods there also is a National Natural Landmark and should be beautiful during Leaf Turn.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Trick-or-Treat Fest also might be a fun outdoor activity with your daughter.

I haven't explored the new Whiskey Island Bridge, but, when I do so, I'll park at Whiskey Island. Unless it's been diminished by the bridge construction, it always had adequate parking on my visits. Of course, the visitor volume may be way up, especially on weekends, with persons checking out the new bridge. Would you have time to visit after arriving on Friday?

The Superior Viaduct is a blind spot in my knowledge of Cleveland. Hopefully someone else can help you!

The water taxi is closed for the season.

https://www.clevelandmetroparks.com/...ee2-water-taxi

I had never heard of the Harrison-Dillard Bikeway, but looking at the map here, it's a north/south trail and just follows MLK Blvd. and likely intersects the east/west Nord Family Greenway at some point

https://www.traillink.com/trail/harr...llard-bikeway/

https://www.traillink.com/trail/harr...llard-bikeway/

I visited the Cleveland Museum of Art in July, when masks weren't mandatory. Unlike elsewhere in Greater Cleveland at the time, most persons were wearing masks. My belief is that CMA visitors are well vaccinated and very public health conscious. Additionally, the volume of the building in comparison to the number of visitors is huge, especially relative to other buildings indoors in Greater Cleveland. Don't miss the ARTLENS Gallery right at the entrance if you visit the CMA. Have you ever seen the ARTLENS Gallery? It's one of the most interesting attractions in Cleveland IMO.

https://www.clevelandart.org/artlens-gallery/about

For the Mentor Headlands Dunes Nature Preserve, park at the far eastern end (turn right on entering) of the parking lot. There are grills in the parking area and elsewhere in the area if you want to picnic. There's a board walk to the beach from the parking lot, and sand trails off the boardwalk that run east/west. Of course, the beach is a good walk to the east to explore the dunes as well.

Mentor Marsh also is a National Natural Landmark:

^it's been many moons since I lived in Painesville, and haven't had the opportunity to visit and see what's new, but the Headlands boardwalk looks great (a young child would love this). I don't know when that was built. I ran across this video recently. The narrator is a bit on the eccentric side , but if you check out his youtube page (Snapshot Illusion) you'll see that in addition to a few nature-related videos, there's an absolutely beautiful walking tour of downtown Cleveland from Sept. 12

Excellent video. Thanks for posting!

Someday, I would like to explore the east/west sand trail, but I'm a little afraid of deer ticks (Lyme's disease). The photographer is a very slow walker, but that helps keep the camera steady. My memory is that it only takes a couple minutes to walk from the parking lot to the beach. Somebody told me it's most beautiful in the spring when wildflowers are blooming.

I've noticed in the summer that this area of the beach is very popular. I suspect one reason is that the sand gets incredibly hot, and the boardwalk is a much more pleasant walk for the feet.

Contrary to what the photographer says, the State of Ohio does not maintain Mentor Headlands beach very well IMO. Cleveland Metroparks grooms its beaches, such as Edgewater, much more diligently. I wonder if Headlands beach ever is groomed as it seems stony to me. Over fifty years ago when I went to Headlands almost daily in the summer, it definitely was groomed frequently. However, the water is much, much cleaner today with the proliferation of sewage treatment plants and expanded sewer line reservoirs and run-off pools.

Here's the hour-long walking tour of Cleveland from Sept. 12.

He also has several videos of Lake Metroparks at his website, such as the Girdled Road Reservation.

^I was a child in the 60's and not only do I remember how polluted the lake was but also the Grand River, from the Diamond Alkali (before Shamrock, as you probably know). It was a greenish color and there was always some sort of sudsy substance floating on top! Additionally, sometimes in the summer the tap water (at least in Painesville) had a sulfuric odor that rendered it almost undrinkable. Just disgusting. To be honest, we never went to Headlands much, but to Fairport Beach which was closer. Even that's improved significantly. Even the town is getting, dare I say, trendy. One of the most critically acclaimed restaurants in recent years in the Cleveland area has been The Pompadour. Additionally there's the Fairport Harbor Creamery for ice cream, and Glazed Fairport for "artisanal" doughnuts. What more could you ask? The last two great for kids--lol also Rego's Brickhouse Pizza is supposed to be pretty good

Many wonderful links!

1) Kinda. She's fully capable of doing so, I think, as she has taken 7-10 steps at a time independently and will walk all over the house, etc, even when holding one hand. It's more of a cautiousness when there's a realization she's walking, that causes her to then prefer to crawl, or be held. You aren't wrong that things can change fast, so we will have to see! I do agree that Farmpark she would enjoy, animals are something she is legitimately starting to notice at this point. Farmpark, Patterson's, and Hiking Spots that you recommend like Holden, Penitentiary Glen are all pretty close together. Bole Woods was closed last time I was at Holden but that was 5-6 years ago so I'd assume it's most likely reopened now?

2) Good idea about the Zoo. Because of that being outdoors and the proximity it has to the airport, that isn't a bad idea at all for Monday, to consider at least (I'm guessing the Trick or Treat event you mentioned isn't a bad idea either, but I'm guessing that's sorta more an early evening/weekend thing). Thanks for the event list, that definitely helps! The Tremont Polish Fest actually jumped out at me, though that is Saturday and we might not be over towards Cleveland that day (although, there is a chance we'd stay on the west side Friday evening and a slim chance we could hit it passing through, if we were early enough.

3) Unfortunately not-we don't even land until after 9 PM Friday, so that would be pretty late to be heading down there. Honestly though, in looking at it, https://www.google.com/maps/dir/1395...942689!1m0!3e2
I would consider doing this Sunday, with 1 of my 2-3 hrs. of pregaming, 3.5 miles is around the same as my standard neighborhood loop jog I try to do 4-5 nights a week now as is, and the weather would prob be optimal for exercise, barring rain.

4) Is the ARTLENS Gallery the touch screen that they have in there towards the front of the Atrium? If so, that thing is really really cool, and you could spend quite a while utilizing and discovering it! I just don't know when we'd be able to fit the Art Museum into the schedule, I think the only way it would work, is if my wife and daughter tagged along for part of my trip to downtown in the early afternoon Sunday, and then dropped me off and went shopping somewhere, back to hotel/house, etc.

Part of the reason the Cod, etc. came up was part of the collectors' mindset I have on traveling at times, even in my home city. I looked on TripAdvisor for the 50 highest attractions with the largest volume of user reviews (not necessarily good or bad) that came up for City of Cleveland, and the ones out of those I had not been to were:
-MOCA/Museum of Contemporary Art
-Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica
-St. John's Cathedral (assuming that's the one on Superior and East 9th)
-Bedford Reservation (I know that's not in Cleveland city limits, so not sure why it made list)
-International Women's Air & Space Museum
-Children's Museum of Cleveland
-Steamship William G Mather
-USS Cod Submarine Memorial

It's been at least 10, maybe 15 years since my last Rock Hall visit too, incidentally.

Thanks again for all your ideas, and kind thoughts, and I will definitely post a trip report from my (and my daughter's) perspectives!

1. Thanks for the posting about the different places in Fairport! Believe it or not, as frequently as I've been in Fairport/Painesville, I haven't been to several of those listed, largely because some of them have even opened in that time span.

2. I will have to check out that guys channel when I have a chance, particularly the walking tour of Cleveland.

If you stay on the West Side Friday night, consider staying at an airport hotel, like the West 150th Wyndham. They likely have shuttles (check hours) to and from the West 150th/Puritas Red Line rail rapid station, so take the Red Line from the airport to the West 150th/Puritas station. Buy 5-trip RTA passes, which I believe have free transfer privileges (check out RTA day passes); you can call and ask if your wife could share a pass. I've heard that car rentals are much cheaper if you get so many miles away from the airport, but you probably would have to wait until Saturday morning to get a car. Enterprise, perhaps others, likely would pick you up from your hotel and deliver you back to the West 150th/Puritas station on Monday. Perhaps you would have to use the downtown Enterprise to get a cheaper rate. You could use the RTA passes to park at the West Side Market (check parking rates) on Sunday and take a bus or the Red Line to First Energy Stadium. Use Google Transit.

Call Holden re: the Bole Woods trail.

The U.S.S. Cod is a great attraction and it's good to visit in October when the weather is cooler as it's not air-conditioned. The Steamship Mather also is very good.

Read about the ARTLENS Gallery and watch the video that I linked. There's much more there than the ARTLENS Wall, including interactive technology exhibits for children. Download the ARTLENS App before visiting the art museum. Your wife and daughter could stay at the Art Museum, perhaps walk over to the botanical garden or the natural history museum while you took the Healthline bus rapid downtown for the football game (or the Red Line if you wanted to walk to Little Italy).

The Rock Hall reportedly is much improved under its new director.

Good luck!
