I'm sorry, but BOTH "school zones" and our idiotic flashing red lights on school busses make us the laughing stock of the world. The rest of the world's parents teach THEIR kids how to cross the street safely and how to get on and off of a bus without having the world around them come to a screeching halt. But our "helicopter" parents??? Noooo! It's all about the little children. After all, the whole friggin country revolves around their rug rats. So we the sheeple sit on our backsides and let the greedy politicians get into our pocket every time some idiotic social calamity comes along. We're SO stupid... Thank you!

Unfortunately, it seems we need all those extra things. I knew a crossing guard who worked in a relatively suburban, calm setting and he's had some VERY close calls. Even if he's in the middle of the street wearing reflective, high-visibility clothes and holding a big red stop sign, cars come very close to hitting him. One morning, they almost hit a little boy trying to cross the street. On top of all this, he worked at an intersection with a traffic light and always waited for it to change to red before helping kids cross. Still, cars would blow through it. It's unbelievable.

It's all a big scam here in Ohio and there is a movement to have this repealed. First off, this is not a "criminal" offense like an ordinary traffic ticket, it's a civil. I would not pay it.

By law, for a misdemeanor, a police officer must witness a misdemeaner offense, or a third party must press charges. Probable cause only comes into play with felonies.

It drives me crazy when people complain about this. First off, you shouldn't be speeding. Second, it tells you when you're approaching one of these cameras. It says "Automated Traffic Enforcement Area" before you reach these cameras. You can't miss it. Just pay the fine and don't speed again.

I wouldn't be speeding if 5-laned roads had speed limits higher than 25MPH or alternating limits of 25, then 35, then 25, then 35, the 25, etc for 400ft stretches. I'm looking at you, Mayfield Rd....

Totally agree with the second part, though.

It drives me crazy when people are apologists for this.

First off, mechanical/electronic devices shouldn't be enforcing the laws of humans. Second, ever see a mobile unit? There is never a warning when one is being approached. As a matter of fact, they're usually hidden. Then, there is no physical proof one was ever even in existence at the location at the time of the ticket. Third, how does one mechanical device ticket another? Under Ohio law, you ticket the driver, not the owner.

Paying then fine without a dispute is just encouraging this latest scheme in revenue generation. Anyone who does is a moron.

PS - This will go down in flames eventually anyway. It's totally illegal.

Boffo, let me put you at the wheel of a big truck with an empty trailer and let you see that you have two choices at these "revenue enhancement points". See if you can stop your rig without jacknifing the trailer and hitting the car in the next lane. Or going through the TWO SECOND yellow and getting a ticket. Some choice, huh? And all this is possible without even speeding. Just try to stop an empty trailer at 20 mph on snow. Even with anticipating the red lights ahead and going below the speed limit, I can get caught. For this reason, I avoid Dayton, OH in a big truck if at all possible. Red light cameras are just tools of chicken-shirt politicians who don't have the guts to raise taxes the honest way.

yeah I actually just got a ticket by the camera last week, I gone 52/40 at toledo area.charged $120
it got my car pic taken but thats this. the title is " CITY OF TOLEDO,OH PHOTO ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM SPEED VIOLATION NOTICE OF LIABILITY" and in the end with red letters...."Failure to respond to this notice will result in a civil action against you"
What should I do with it? should I go to a court hearing, does that mean I charged by something?

Trash it. If a second and third notice comes, then worry about it. Even a summons is hand delivered for Pete sake. They don't even have the fortitude to send it signature required. That tells you how much they really care about it.
