Trust me, my parents were both chemists. Definitely not a 6 figure job.

The starting salaries you showed for chemists are truly astonishingly low. However, let me post some excerpts from the rest of the link:

"0-2 years of experience. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Entry Level"

OK, so that's for starting at the bottom, right out of college as a 22-year-old. If it's not realistic to double or triple that salary in ten years, maybe you should look into a related line of work:

From The Salary of a High School Chemistry Teacher | eHow.com "Chemistry teacher salaries will be above the median average in most locations. In the Detroit area, more than 300 area teachers earn more than $100,000 a year---double the region's median household income, according to a Detroit News survey. The top average salary for teachers with master's degrees and ten years' experience is almost $82,000."

Or become a pharmacist. It surprises me how many people know exactly what they need to do to make more money, and don't do it.

There are still some people that value their contribution to society or self-fulfillment over the almighty dollar. I encourage people who can afford to keep a lower paying job they like to stay at that job than compromise themselves and force themselves to do something they don't care about, just because they might make more money.
