Most places are safe. Are you looking to camp or rent a condo? Hatteras/Ocracoke Islands are about as solitude as you can get once you leave the towns/villages. Even more so after Labor Day.

We go there every Thanksgiving- it's almost deserted and has a very quiet and calm. We love the solitude. However, you will need a coat and will not be able to go into the water. We were married in North Nags Head October 25th and were able to wear long sleeves without a coat or a jacket. We attempted to get married in September, but Hurricane Isabel thought differently of it! We usually go one week in the summer and one at Thanksgiving. Two totally different experiences. Hope this helps.
