My family and I are planning to go to the Outer Banks for a few days in the shoulder season. We plan on staying in the Hatteras or Buxton area one night and then traveling north and staying in a town around Kill Devil Hills or Duck the second night.

Are there any motels/hotels/inns, etc. that are located directly on the beach? As if you could walk out your door and literally step onto the beach? My dad prefers not to stay in a skyscraper and since we are only staying in each location for one night, I don't think anyone would rent us a cottage (but maybe I'm wrong..?)

I noticed the Cavalier in Kill Devil Hills, but read some really bad reviews. We are looking for another hotel similar to that one.. but a little better/cleaner.

Thanks!

weve stayed at the cavalier several times, and have never had a problem. its not fancy, but it was clean and right on the beach.

I've stayed at the Ramada in KDH. It's right on the beach and was clean. It wasn't high class, but people were nice and the room was neat and clean. I believe there's a patio leading out to the beach. But it is oceanfront.

The outer banks has restrictions on hotels so the motels and few hotels what your finding on web is as good as you will get. the tallest maybe 2 to 4 floors. Also due to sand dunes no hotel or motel will be directly on the beach.
Manteo has real cute motels.
