We are visiting friends in Wilmington next week and while there want to take a look at what the Southport/Sunset Beach/Calabash area has to offer in regards to future retirement (1-3 years away). Golf is a top priority and we don't have a problem with a gated community as long as it is fairly established and doesn't have a lot of rental properties. Price range is approximately $225,000 to $350,000. Any help would be appreciated.

That is a Tall order

There are more than 35 golf courses in Brunswick Co. and lots of golf course communities.

This web site is a good start-
St James Plantation Real Estate, Southport Real Estate, Winding River Real Estate, Brunswick Forest Real Estate | Plantation Properties

It is limited, but gives you an idea of what you have to look at.

There are also some smaller, less marketed communities that might fit your needs.

Carolina Shores NC Real Estate - Golf Community Homes

Happy Golfing!

With that budget you can buy a home in any golf course subdivision in Brunswick County including St James and Ocean Ridge which are generally thought of as the best two although selection will be limited in Ocean Ridge. There are several golf subdivisions around Calabash and Sunset Beach. Sea Trail, Brunswick Plantation, Crow Creek, Sandpiper Bay and Carolina Shores will all fit your budget. Winding River is a ways up the road from Southport. Not my favorite but there's plenty of homes in there in your price range too.

Might be tough finding an Ocean Ridge home in that range and if you do you could go broke keeping up with the "Jones's".

Curious comment regarding "keeping up with the Jonse's"- not sure what the intended implication is - could you possibly elucidate us??

He's referring to the fact that Ocean Ridge is probably the most expensive golf course community in Brunswick County. "Keeping up with the Jones's" is a slang term for spending a bunch of money to maintain a lifestyle that is equal to or superior to your neighbors for the sole purpose of trying to impress those around you. Hence the term "keeping up". It's a little more prevelant in communities with club memberships like Ocean Ridge which is probably why he made that comment.

Thanks T2T!
I thought "keeping up with the Jones'" referred to folks who lived above their means in an effort to impress someone else.

The OP asked a reasonable question, with specific parameters and got some general recommendations.

I found the "Jones'" comment to be strange and quite sad for the poster.
