According to the Minutes of the March 17, 2016 meeting, the Super 70 Corridor Commission is recommending that NCDOT apply to AASHTO and FHWA to designate the US-70 corridor from I-40 near Garner to Morehead City as I-50. NCDOT will likely go along with it. I'm not sure how to link PDF documents here, but the link to the PDF can be found on this page. Mystery solved!
Media isn't usually right on details like this anymore, sadly.
Exactly. Besides, there's already an I-70 that goes from I-695 in Baltimore to I-15 in Cove Fort, Utah. Even NCDOT isn't stupid enough to apply for "I-70". AASHTO and FHWA would reject it in a New York minute.

I don't understand why I-50 if they want I-44 on what's currently 64... it's out of pattern (not the first time, though).
Well, I think even the media can read a 2 digit number...
"Today, it’s sprinkled with stoplights – slowing your drive to the beach. But some day soon it will be called U.S. Interstate 70. On Wednesday, Gov. Pat McCrory and other dignitaries unveiled a “future U.S. Interstate 70†sign on U.S. 70 in Goldsboro."

But if McCrory has proven anything, its that he's no genius.
So much fail in that article. Here's the actual sign that was unveiled. A blank space was left so a numbered interstate shield can be placed on there once AASHTO approves the number, which is I-50 apparently, in May.
I also wonder if it means they will re number NC 50. When the interstate is done there will be 2 50s in Garner
Well...they wouldn't be required to change it, so I guess it would depend on how much driver confusion there is, but I doubt it will change. NC-50 runs from Creedmoor north of Raleigh all the way down to Topsail Beach, so it'll likely cost more than it's worth to change the signs along a 164 mile route, so NCDOT would probably figure that it's not worth the expense just because a few confused drivers either can't or are too lazy to read a map. That's my guess, anyway. Most people can tell an interstate sign from state highway sign and know it's not the same road (540 being the exception to that rule due to the tolls). NCDOT members were present at the Super 70 Corridor Commission's meeting and none of them raised any objections to the Commission's request to use I-50 for the US-70 corridor. AASHTO's deadline for numbering applications is April 18, so NCDOT has until then to sent the I-50 request. AASHTO's Special Committee on US Route Numbering meets on May 24. FHWA will still need to sign off on it if (likely when) AASHTO approves the number.
I'd be surprised if AASHTO approved using I-50 for this route. Two-digit interstates divisible by 5 are supposed to be major highways running long distances. This would probably be the shorest "divisible by 5" interstate in the country.
I-38 or I-42 would be more appropriate, or even a 3-digit based on I-40 or I-95. But not I-50...
