Sorry, my post from my mobile must not have worked.

These large sharks are not just ocean dwellers. Below is a link to a blog by a Duke grad student about studying large bull sharks in the Neuse River. Turnagain Bay is down near the mouth, almost to the bombing range.

I have heard of large bull sharks being caught as far up as the bridges at New Bern, but can't document that, however, the link details a scientific study.

I live and fish near Sunset Beach NC...I have seen large skates/rays jumping from the water as well as other 1-2 foot bluefish and other species fleeing larger predators recently. This is somewhat unusual and indicates there may be large, and apparently aggressive (6 attacks at least this month!!) Sharks in 2-3 feet of water... Be careful everyone, follow the good advice here or just stay out of the water for a little while. Enjoy your vacations safely !

Skates/rays always jump out of water. Bluefish jump out of water when attacking baitfish. However, big sharks do indeed swim in close. Guys fish for them on the beach at night down on the obx. They are there, be as safe as you can. Other than that there isn't much one can do.
Not sure what is causing the uptick in bites this year in that area?
