My husband and I are looking at New Bern/ Washington, NC area as a retirement location. My concern is air travel with family living in other states. Which airport do people use and is it convenient? I'm not keen on having to pick up a visitor at the airport and then drive 1.5 hrs home. Any input?

There's an airport in New Bern, but it mostly has connecting flights to Charlotte and Atlanta. The airport code is EWN if you want to check what it has.
If you were doing international travel, it might be worth driving to RDU.
We have done both, but finally have pretty much settled on the convenience of the New Bern Airport. Yeah, you have to go to either Charlotte or Hot Lanta, but that is the price you have to pay to live down here.
THere is also a bus from New Bern that takes you to the AMTRACK station for NYC and such. Not real fast but pretty laid back. Unless I was in a real hurry, I would take that going up to or coming back from the Big Apple.
If you live in New Bern, you'll use the airport there...if you live in Washington, you'll likely go out of Greenville (which is about the same as New Bern). Either way you can drive to Raleigh if you want more direct flights.
That situation will not change going forward...it is what it is.
Thanks to all for the inputs. I was surprised to find flights in/out of New Bern to not be exceptionally expensive.
Air fares are perhaps the most irrational (from economics viewpoint) pricing of anything in the modern world.
