We are currently building in St James and have just sold our home in NY. We are in need of a rental, preferably a house, starting Oct 1st. We do have a dog that is love able and not destructive. We want to be down there while the house is being built. Would consider anything in that area but would prefer to be in St James.

There are a couple of two-bedroom condos for rent at Realtor.com ($1200-1300/month). I have rarely seen a single-family house for rent, but you could check with local Realtors.
I have heard that if you sign up for Just Judy, there are classifieds for SJP home rentals. I know a few residents that are renting homes on site, while they are having their houses built.
