Well, this is getting a little far afield. Much homework is done online, and many teachers use Interactive Student Notebooks, that replace texts as the source of information. Students are also directed to go get information rather than rely on a textbook. Finally, some texts are online.

NC education has 99 problems but lack of textbooks ain't one!
