I am 55 and considering retiring to the Greenville area soon. I want to find out about what there is for older active people. I like to hike & bicycle & kayak, things like that.
Also need to make sure there is good services available as I age. What is there for elder medical care & the like?
As far as medical care, there's a teaching hospital at ECU so couldn't be better.
As far as activities, I don't know that you would want to live directly in a college town; check into towns or suburbs away from where the university is. There are probably some 55+ neighborhoods if you dig around.
Washington, about 25 miles east, has an excellent outfitter that organizes both bicycle and kayak events. There is also an exceptional kayak club in New Bern.
Pitt County and Greenville has work to do on taking care of its aging population. I'm not aware of much case management available for the elderly and home-bound, but since you are still pretty young, maybe that doesn't matter.
There are lots of activities, especially of interest to you, and as others have said, the hospital system here is great. If you are religious, you are sure to make fast friends, the people here are super friendly and easy to get to know.
Winterville has nice neighborhoods, and there are two golf courses which have homes surrounding them right in Greenville.
We had to relocate out of State because of my husbands employment. We will still travel the 8 hrs. to go to our Dr.'s in Farmville & Greenville. In our opinion the health care & Vets. are superior.
The neighborhoods are really what attracts people to Greenville. There are really some beautiful neighborhoods with great trees and wooded areas with terrific houses - and you can get a lot of house and yard for your buck in Greenville.
There's work to do outside of those neighborhoods - mainly in terms of infrastructure and the city needing to "catch up" to its population. I'd say that with the greater urban population of Greenville (which is essentially as north as top of the 264 loop and as south as Ayden) nearing 120,000, the city is about 10 years behind where it should be in terms of organization and infrastructure. The good news is that it is catching up probably quicker than anyone could've ever asked for.
I'd retire in Washington before I did Greenville, though. People go to Greenville to work, not to retire, if that makes sense.
Does anybody know where that trail is where they were riding the horses in the video? I've been looking for some good trails to ride around here.
