We are moving from Newport News VA to the Winterville/Greenville NC area within the next few months due to my husband's job. We are pretty sure, after doing some investigating, that the Wintergreen/Hope/Conley or Chicod/Conley is the route we need to go for schools. We have two children. One is only 17 months, and our oldest is 8 yrs old and in 2nd grade.
Our oldest has a diagnosis of Autism and ADHD. He has an IEP and is considered high functioning. He currently is in a modified self contained classroom - he divides his time between the regular classroom and a smaller class setting. His main homeroom teacher though is the special ed teacher and she has an aide in the classroom with her. He is pulled out twice a week for speech. His comprehension of things is the largest hurdle and then combine that with severe distractibility.
I have already reached out to someone with Pitt County Schools and have sent them a copy of his IEP.
I have tried to dig up as much information as I can on reviews of the schools listed above but I cannot seem to find anything about what it is like to have a special needs child within these schools. How are the teachers, do you feel your child has an advocate within the school(s), what are the challenges you have faced with regards to IEP meetings, overall attentiveness to your child's needs, faculty & parent cohesiveness? I realize that since every child is different, every story will be, but I am hoping to have a better summarization of what we can expect or any feedback?
Thank you so much for any information you can provide to us!
Especially since it's so close, I would really suggest scheduling a meeting with the counselor/spec ed teacher in person before you move. That, or see if you can put together some sort of conference call.

There's a plethora of children in our schools these days with IEPs for ADHD and Autism. I am sure the schools are very very experienced in how to deal with these issues.
On the other hand, I would be very worried that the schools are FUNDED to do so. That is not a school or building issue, but a state issue.
Anything requiring more than minimum, bare bones funding in NC education, at this moment, should be extremely suspect.
I have been to Autism training at an excellent facility in Greenville. It was years ago, don't remember the name, but if they are still funded, they will be a great help.
I have reached out to the Autism Society of NC and requested an advocate so I can gain some perspective about the various schools. I have been reading up on the funding issue too and understand that has a lot to do with it. We deal with it here in VA too. Currently my son has transportation over to a different school bc this year they didnt have the resources/services he would need at the school he is zoned for. Teacher aides, special ed teachers, etc. It is so hard to judge on the ratings alone. He did go to his zoned school last year and they aren't rated very well at all but he had a wonderful teacher and we were very pleased with everything.
Also had some feedback from a Greenville FB page that Ridgewood Elementary does an excellent job for special needs.
Thanks for the responses! I still hope to get some opinions based on first hand knowledge. Thanks all!
Thank you for that! I had actually spoken with one of them last week and forwarded his IEP over.
