I believe the local building codes specify hurricane-proofing. For example, our roof joists have extra reinforcing to prevent the roof panels from flying off. Our garage door has reinforcing bars to prevent it from being blown off.
They are necessary, not just for your house, but to prevent flying debris from damaging your neighbors' property and risking their lives.
I do not know a lot of builders, but you might contact our builder. They build mostly spec homes, but they do build on your own lot with their standard planes:
