OP look at Castle Hayne. 10 mins away from Wilmington, it's very rural, however idk anything about the school system there, nor do I think crime is a problem over there.

I am totally laughing with you right now. Alabama is totally different. There's no gardening or chickens unless you own rural property. Thank you so much for the clarification. And I could give the chickens and gardening up if the organic markets are plentiful. Although I'd rather not. It may be an issue for a "renter" anyway. Somewhere in 800-1000$ range.

Here is a website to check out regarding organic, etc...

SENC - Feast Down East

This may provide some more insight into the offerings in SE NC. Wilmington has all of the major organic food stores now, Fresh Market, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and a number of locals. Farmers Markets downtown and Wrightsville Beach in the warm weather months.

Your range of $800-1000 may put you in more rural territory (that's low end for the Coast), which will push you further from the Beach. Schools are worse as you get away from the Coast as well. GA mentioned Hampstead, its an affordable place, but its mainly subdivisions with rules. The landscape as you go inland is agricultural based, with little to no regulation on land...and therefore, poorer, low performing schools, and further from amenities like medical and shopping.
