Are 'outsiders' who permanently relocate to Ocracoke, accepted by the local community?

Depends. The old time locals, who have been there for generations probably won't be super accepting. On the other hand, there will be folks like you who have recently moved there, and I'm sure they will be more accepting. Of course, how you act will be the primary determining factor. if you're respectful, friendly and helpful, all will be good. if you obnoxious, pushy and complain all the time about how much better things were in ______, then you might not feel the love.

Here is the bottom line. If you have money, and spend it freely, in both stores and bars, you will fit right in.

Coastal Planner, have you been to Ocracoke lately?!

Yes, no problem, Anudave. Lots of folks fall in love with Ocracoke and relocate there.

I'd go with Manteo and spend a lot of time eating and drinking coffee at TL's family restaurant. I love the chicken salad plate and almost everything else.

Ocracoke is isolated. A steady flow of tourists in the summer. Pretty bleak and cold in cold in the winter with little recreation or diversion. People are friendly but I think you need to be somewhat of a introvert with the ability to entertain your self, especially in the winter. Every thing has to come in by boat so expect slightly higher prices. Its a good haven for artists water-men. As far as being accepted, that pretty is pretty much up to you. Arseholes need not apply.
