Poppydog, Good points about the benefits of taking the 10 o'clock ferry. I am not a morning person either, but better than my girl! Should I get reservations ahead of time? I would assume the 10 am one is popular.

I am still wondering about that last day. I have heard Hwy 12 has heavy transition traffic on the weekends and I want to keep being in the car to a minimum if I can. So, I am leaning toward spending all day Sunday in and around the area of Cape Hatteras and finding lodging there for our last night. I have read that the beach in Frisco is really nice, so I thought maybe find somewhere there would be a good spot?

Then, get up early Monday morning to drive north and see the lighthouses/sites. I would imagine Monday traffic will be better, but if it isn't much different, we could change this part.

Yes, you should get ferry reservations ahead of time for the Swan Quarter ferry. The Ocracoke-Hatteras ferry doesn't take reservations and is free, but it can get backed up.

Saturday is the worst day for traffic on the OBX by far. Fewer houses changeover on Sunday, but a few do. I'm not really an OBX expert, though. We tend to stick to Ocracoke. It's our fave.

TripAdvisor forums are good if you haven't checked them out yet. There's also an OBX-specific website and forum where I'm sure they would be able to give you traffic advice: Outer Banks Message Board | OBX Connection Forum

I'll be visiting Ocracoke for the first time later this month, staying for an entire week. Any hints or tips, especially when it comes to groceries?

Between the Variety Store and the Community Store and Zillies you should have plenty of options for groceries. Don't buy too much, though. There are so many good restaurants on Ocracoke.

This page has more interior shots of the Variety Store so you can see kind of what they have there: https://www.ocracokenavigator.com/variety-store/
