I’m just a bit inland from Oak Island and OI and Ocean Isle took the brunt. Much property damage, trees down. Oak Island is closed to people coming in till further notice. Southport also has a curfew today so crews can clear roads. No flooding near me but the islands did.
After all the talk of it being a tropical storm it strengthened to 80 mph. We’ll be picking up debris for a long time. So far I’ve heard of one death from a tornado.
Hampstead, tree damage, just small limbs in my yard, haven't heard of any major damage in my area. Power was out for 12 hours. It was worse than I thought it would be.
Two of the marinas in Southport are devastated. I guess surge, combined with a full moon and incoming high tide was more than the floating docks could take. Massive failure in Southport Marina with the whole west section of the docks missing-along with about 40 boats. Some boats have been found further down in the marsh, others have washed up off of Cottage Creek, and others are still missing. the rest of the boats in the marina are all piled on top of each other. One person who decided to ride out the storm in his boat describes his escape as worthy of an Indiana Jones movie. A tornado went over our house (heard the roar), but touched down behind us and thankfully missed us. Oak Island is a mess. Since it was a voluntary evacuation many vacationers decided to stay for the "adventure". They left their cars under the oceanfront houses and needless to say the cars flooded and some are now in the middle of the sand covered streets. Most are totaled. Now they are being forced to evacuate with no water, no sewer, and no power in those homes- not that I can imagine wanting to stay under those conditions!! The west side is much worse than the east side from what I've seen.
Yeah, watching that drone video on Beach Drive, and seeing all those cars askew in the sand covered streets showed that a lot of people decided to ride out that lil’ old Cat 1 storm. Bet they won’t next time.
So, what's the best way to survive/tolerate a hurricane in Eastern NC?
Dig a hole, nice and deep.
On top of the resultant dirt pile, you build a "sphere shaped" living structure.
Get yer "fresh water" maker, generator, solar panels.
Food can be "acquired" via rifle & ammo.
Pretty simple, actually.
