All the ladies at MAC'S SPEED SHOP!

If it wasn't for that place, I would have gone crazy for sure. It's the best thing in Wilmington!
That's a chain restaurant. Wilmington is filled with local restaurants to explore.

Lots of out-of-towners dont give the local establishments a chance. I think they would appreciate the City more if they did.

On that note, Casey's is my favorite restaurant in North Carolina.

Yes! If I could afford the calories I'd eat there all the time.

I love to go visit Wilmington-- we live a few hours north. Love it best when we've parked the car and are on foot. Don't much like the traffic -- as so many have mentioned.

But walking? It's terrific...

Lovely neighborhoods, wonderful Airlie Gardens, super restaurants, so pretty along the river walk, and strolling through historic neighborhoods...cultural events...

Hmmm, I think I need a visit soon...

I'll never go back. USA Today ran a piece in October, "What is the worst city in your state?" Guess who won? This is what they put:

North Carolina: Wilmington
• Population: 117,545
• Median home value: $236,300
• Poverty rate: 24.7 percent
• Violent crimes per 100,000 people: 646

In North Carolina, 15.4 percent of residents live below the poverty line. In Wilmington, 24.7 percent of residents live in poverty – one of the highest poverty rates of any city in the state. Wilmington is also one of only three large cities in North Carolina where over half of all households earn less than $40,000. For reference, the typical household in the state earns $50,584.

Low income areas often struggle with other societal issues, including higher crime rates. Wilmington's violent crime rate of 646 incidents per 100,000 residents is much higher than the statewide rate of 372 incidents per 100,000 residents.

Guess thats why the population increased by 10% between 2010 and 2016, lol.

Wilmington is nowhere near the "worst" city in NC.

That's how I enjoy downtown Wilmington, park & walk. Have you been lately? They've extended the Riverwalk northwards, so it's a much longer walk than it used to be.

While the crime and poverty are high, is it relegated to certain parts of Wilmington? Or is this widespread?

Some people could say crime in the Bronx is off the wall, but those who live there can tell you it is in certain areas .

Certain parts, like every other city. I’ve been to Wilmington a couple of times before and had no problem, though it’s been years since I was last there. A lot of development has been happening since, which gives me all the more reason to check it out again.

I’d wager the majority of the violent crimes are cases where the suspect and victim know each other (drug deals gone wrong, gangs duking it out, etc.).
