Hi, I'm a soon-to-be college grad who is considering a relocation from Baltimore to coastal NC or SC. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a town which is not strictly busy during the beach season, is good for young people, is affordable and is generally a safe place to live? I don't mind not being directly on the beach, would just like to be within an hours drive. Looking for a town which is good for people in their 20's and 30's but affordable. Please help!
I would say Charelston, SC first, Wilmington, NC second. But honestly, it would be best to be two hours from the Beach in Raleigh if you want to get a good job. Hard to find good jobs on the coast becasue they are in high demand and both cities have a college with degree wielding students coming out each year scooping up what jobs are to be had.
Thanks to you both, I am a physical therapy major. I think not being so close to the actual beach is the best idea, so I agree with you Matt. I was just hoping I could have the best of both worlds I guess.
research your field in Greenville, Wilmington, Craven County, Carteret, and Onslow County. They are all coastal places with either big medical centers & universities (the two former) or military bases where your major might be in use.
If you don;t find anything there, you probably won't find it on the coast, readily.

Greenville is huge into medical. A world class cardiac hospital and the hub of medical care in eastern NC. It's affordable and relatively safe as long as you avoid the bad neighborhoods. It's not hard to tell which neighborhoods to stay out of. The beach is 1.5 hours south at places like Morehead City.
I agree with the above post about Greenville. My son who's 26 moved down there two years ago and is having the time of his life. Housing is cheaper with it being a college town and medical facilities are abundant so perhaps you will be able to find employment opportunities also. Good luck!
