What is a good close place to go to get to the ocean from Durham? Obviously this time of year isn't warm to be on the beach swimming but are there places where we can walk on the beach yet things to do to make it worth the trip?
thanks for any input!

Kure Beach, Carolina Beach, Atlantic Beach is probably the closest, but it is more known for the fishing, tis world class, they do have a good beach usually deserted or close to it, all of the above are friendly, quiet places to relax.

Yup, tis a nice place, have camped out down there several times, it's just on the other end of the same spit of land. They have a bridge on their end too. I am still somewhat minor league ticked off about closing down SalterPath Family Campground, although the Holiday Travelpark Resort in Emerald Isle is also nice.

Emerald Isle and Atlantic beach are at the opposite tips of the same Island (Bogue Banks). Start at Atlantic beach on the east tip visit Fort Macon State Park, eat lunch at picnic tables at the fort macon bathhouse beach access. If you want more seclusion and want to eat directly on the beach, i typically use the access at New Bern st. Leaving there walk around the board walk at the circle (too bad there's no amusement park there anymore or jungle land for that matter). Next stop should be the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. There head to Emerald Isle for putt-putt golf or double back down and across the bridge to the nc maritime museum in Beaufort or to visit the shop along their waterfront.
