What can anyone tell me about New Bern, NC? My husband and I are considering relocating and that was one of the areas we found.

We have two small children and are looking for a nice place to raise them...Good schools, shopping and restaurants, etc.

My husband is a vice principal and I am a teacher. I am aware of the budget cuts, etc. in North Carolina and we are not moving until we both find jobs. We are really just looking to start over.

Any advice???

Thanks

Schools can be pretty good, some are not.

Shopping is fair. Jacksonville, Greenville and Morehead City all have better and all about 45 minutes away.

Some pretty good restaurants, but not a lot. Been here about 2 years now and am getting pretty tired of what we have. Several very nice ones that I would never tire of, but can only afford occasionally. Again, Greenville and Morehead City area have others.

I think the Craven County Schools Job fair is tomorrow. There are a few openings, but I am sure they will be quickly filled. Asst Principal is a very political hot potato but I will defer on that one.

Good Luck.

Also, use the forum search. Type in New Bern or teaching, for example, and you'll get pages of discussion.

Check with the Craven County School Board. I know that Bangert Elementary has pulled their current VP out of retirement. (not sure how long he is staying) The current principal at the high school has taken another job somewhere and The Epiphany School (Nicholas Sparks founded private school) is expanding rapidly. This is a great area for educators.
