I read some time ago that there are plans for a huge shipping port to be built in Southport NC. Is that still going forward or by any chance, is it not going to happen?

It looks like they are still doing feasibility studies.

Sounds like the project Cape Cod's been fighting - the Cape Wind Farm where a private company wants to build 130 440 ft. tall wind turbines in Nantucket Sound. Really bad idea, but it just got approval from the Obama administration. However, it seems as though there will be many lawsuits filed, but it does seem inevitable.

We actually looked at Southport and Oak Island before deciding to move to Carteret County. We had some great memories from vacationing on Bald Head Island.
When we looked at Southport in 2004 there were very limited services in the area. At the time, there was only one recommended restaurant in town. I understand things are much improved from then.
We ended up deciding on the Crystal Coast before we had even heard about the port. Beach access is much easier along the Crystal Coast, and modern services were closer and easier to find.
After we moved, and I decided to go into real estate in 2006, I took some of my final courses in Wilmington. The agents from the area that were in the classes were very concerned about the port and how it would change the character of the area.
We lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia for years. We could see one of the container terminals from our bedroom window. Most of the containers left by train. It was a large metropolitan area so it was just part of life there.
My understanding is that in Southport, it was going to be mostly trucks hauling away the containers, so not only would you have the port, but there would have to be a lot of road construction to take care of all the truck traffic.
Come visit Swansboro, Emerald Isle (http://coastalnc.org/emeraldislenctravelguidecd - broken link), and Beaufort (http://coastalnc.org/beaufortnctravelguidecd - broken link). The links take you to my travel guides. You might find one of these other neat spots along the coast will meet your needs.

I have lived in some neat spots, from the shores of the Bay of Fundy to a mountainside in Roanoke, Va. Our spot on the White Oak River in Carteret County is the best of all the places we have lived.
It is close enough to being paradise on its own, but in ten minutes in our skiff, I can be in Bogue Inlet which is one of the neatest places I have ever been.

Your best resource for up to date info. on this is the State Port Pilot, my guess is it will be voted down, so no worries. Even if it did take place which is about 30 to 40 years out, they will have railroad transport.
Quite honestly, I don't see it happening in our life time, there is not enough support. Get on board and do your research, instead of relying on old outdated news.

Actually, transport was to be done by train, or a separate road was to be built, land had been identified, and it would have alleviated traffic on the roads used by commuters, plus be more "GREEN".
The issue is dormant now, not enough funding to do anymore reseach, and folks down this way new and old timers would never allow it.
Southport is a great stop over on the ICW with many quaint homes and plenty of history re river pilots escorting ships up to Wilmington. We had at one time considered a move here but found out that being 2 miles away from an atomic power plant was a show stopper and hearing the locals talk about the army terminal in the negative was not what we expected. If it works for you - consider your options.
