The radio waves are burning up this morning with talk shows talking about Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence should have the right to enter the NFL whenever he wants after whipping Alabama in the CFB championship.
The NFL currently has a rule not to accept someone until their 3rd year after high school. Maurice Clarrett took the NFL to court over the ruling years back and lost. (Of course he had much bigger problems!)
These phenom players like Trevor really don't get much from college. College is to prepare you for the workforce, but he is already prepared to make millions. And if some NFL team wants to take a chance on a 19/20 year old kid, then they should be able to.
Trevor could get hurt if he continues to play. Many players now are skipping meaningless bowl games right before they are eligible to enter the draft to prevent injury. Trevor (or similar players) could skip their junior year to save themselves.
If these kids can make a decision to join to military at 18, then they should be able to decide to play with the big boys.
Yes they should be able to turn pro whenever the law allows. College athletes get exploited for their entertainment value, while being exposed to significant health hazards. They should be allowed to compete for an NFL salary if they want.

The NBA has shown that allowing players right out of high school doesn't tend to end well. Exceptions to every rule, of course.
Whether it should be 1, 2 or 3 years.. I do agree that people shouldn't come right out of high school into any professional sport. I can't say what the appropriate timeframe is, but it's more than nothing.
To be honest, I think the current system is OK, even though it's the NFL free farm system. Three years is helpful to prepare these guys for the big league.
It's rare to have some kid that can go from high school or just one year in college and play in the NFL. But it does happen occasionally.

And three years pushes people towards finishing school and graduating, even if they do move on to the NBA or NFL or whatever professional league.
I do think college players need some form of compensation outside of the scholarship. Not talking big money.. But some kind of monthly stipend just for the little things.
It's the NFL's decision. The NFL is essentially a corporation with its own rules, like every other corporation. The college players DO HAVE THE RIGHT to play professional football whenever they want. They just need to find another league with rules that will allow it. It's a free country.

XFL has already stated they are not going to follow NFL guidelines regarding eligibility so players will have at least one option to get paid...
