UF is great if you want to go to school with 50,000 of your closest friends.

It depends on the circumstance. There are many private colleges that are low ranked or unranked and have little to no name recognition. At the same time, there are many public schools that are ranked high overall and/or highly ranked in your major.

This. Also, many colleges, public and private, have good regional reputations but aren't known nationally.

I think one thing that hasn't been discussed is what your child is like. If your child is a focused, mature individual for his/her age, then money invested in a private college is probably well spent. If your child is immature, not sure where he or she wants to do, and/or is going to college because all his/her friends are, then a public college, perhaps even a community college, is a better choice.

I am the child, and I like to think of myself as mature but I know I have a lot to learn. I think if I am able to attain work in the journalism field after graduating it will be money well spent, regardless if my salary doesn't make up for the tuition cost very quickly.

My private school was another that worked out to be cheaper than public, due to more grants and scholarships being available.

Sticker price? Higher than public...but few paid sticker price. I paid less than 1/4 of sticker price.

At any rate, I didn 't go to my school because it was private, I went to it because it suited me best, and because they paid me more to attend than I paid to attend.

Because of the higher tuition of private schools, student's often qualify for more need based financial aid. I didn't qualify for any financial aid at the state schools I applied to. The private school was able to find financial aid to cover 100% of my tuition for 2/3 years. The third year (the year I was the only student in college in the family) they were able to cover 70% of my tuition. I'm not sure what they found because I was on a scholarship that had a requirement that I accept any aid they found for me so they did all the work to find it.

Why would you waste your money at anywhere else other than where the top faculty teach?

You mean the top faculty do research and let their TA's teach, correct?
