I've been having a real hard time concentrating and getting any college work done. I try working on school work, at work, when times permits, and it is very difficult. I come home after 8 hrs of dealing with people with the same problems over and over again, i don't want to deal with anything.

The weekend comes and my brain is fried. I try to pick it up, nothing.

Anyone got any ideas?

the first would be to quit trying to squeeze school into your job

the second isn't fun - but it's a sacrifice that needs to be made

cut out the other tiring aspects of your life - eat easy to make meals with good nutrition, get sleep, socialize on breaks from work and not work on breaks from socializing, etc

find a quiet nearby place where you can go, relax, clear your head and get class work completed

it's all a matter of discipline - it also helps if you leave your work at work - clear your head on the way home, know how many hours of school you need to get in that nights and focus in and get it done

im not squeezing it. there are times where it is slow and i can get homework in. I have no struggles in math so im able to do that at work, but when it comes to science, forget it.

cut out tiring aspects of my life.... hmmmm that would be work itself. hahaha.

Seriously, though. My life is cake. I wake up at 9am and go to work, i come home at 7pm, make dinner, and do homework or veg out. I do this all week

Not sure... what socializing will accomplish, could you expand on that?

It is hard to do but you should get away from the computer/internet during study time. Go to the library or coffee shop sans computer.

No matter who you are or how well you are organized, going to school while working a full time job is hard. I know that Science is not my subject either. It sounds like you feel overwhelmed when you pick up the science book. My advice is to start reading each chapter in Science in short spans. Read a section at a time and try to understand that fully. Take a 5 minute break and then try again. Sometimes when we are so overwhelmed with a subject, we try to absorb all the information at once and disaster strikes. No CONCENTRATION or NO RETENTION. I think the key is to relax. If you are a perfectionist, this will be hard for you. Understand that you can only do your best and if you fail, take the class again. The important thing is that you DON'T give up and YOU WILL SUCCEED. I also would not recommend trying to do my homework at work. You can not give your attention fully to either. (You may also be afraid of getting caught at work, so you rush to try to get it done). Also, realize that it is not the time spent doing your work, but the quality you spend on it that is important. I hope this advice helps some. I am not an expert, but it works for me.

Cut back your hours and take out a small student loan to make up the difference? IDK, it's what my son had to do. He went from working 30 hours a week to just fifteen hours, mostly on weekends. Says it made a big difference for him, well worth the cost of the loan.

I second this suggestion. There are a lot of people that seem to handle full time work and full time school fairly well. I am not one of them and I found that out the hard way. I failed miserably for many reasons you are mentioning, in a course that was hard for me.

I would have definitely done whatever possible to cut back on the hours I needed to work if I'd realized how hard it was going to be. But no, I was cocky and thought I could do it all...

If you can simply take classes that you know are easy for you until you are able to cut back on working for the harder classes, then that is what i would do (and I am planning to do just that when I am back in school in the Spring). I wasn't offered loans as part of my financial aid package but when it gets down to the classes that I know are a big challenge for me then I'm going to take out a loan that allows me to work minimally.

Don't try and do things the way you have seen everyone else do it... you have to recognize what works best for you and be honest about any limitations and work within them. I had this idea in my head that I "should" be able to handle this with ease and that "everyone else" works full time and does school full time with no problems. Well , I am not "everyone" and I realize now that I don't have anything to prove to anyone other than myself so I am changing my plan of attack

Take this advice cautiously, but you might have ADD or something. I taught a kid last year that was having problems. Got him some Adderall and he was fine. Went from Cs to straight As. Legally, by the way.

Did you have this problem in high school or elementary? Adderall is not necessarily the answer. My understanding is that drugs that are prescribed for kids with ADD will help anyone concentrate. If you did not have problems in high school or any other time, I think it is just that you have taken on more than you can handle. I always did well in school, but I know I wouldn't have if I had worked full time and tried college full time also. You are essentially working 2 jobs. If you had this problem your entire life, then I would suggest talking to a specialist to see if it could be ADD.
