We're looking forward to visiting at the end of July. We're flying into Denver & will rent a car at the airport. While researching our options, my husband found an online discussion on the toll roads of Colorado and the costs associated with a rental car on them -- whoa!
Seems like we can choose to pay a "convenience fee" of $4 a day to allow us to be billed for tolls ... umm ... umm ... confused! Please help us understand the costs of CO toll roads.

We're coming to CO for a wedding at the Mining Exchange hotel on a Saturday night. Our itinerary has us landing in Denver on Wednesday; staying in Colorado Springs for 3 days; Saturday night wedding; and then visiting Fort Collins. We expect to be tourists around town and have no time obligations other than the wedding. We're looking forward to seeing Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods & whatever else you may suggest.

But what's up with the toll roads? We'd rather buy lunch than pay to use a road. Please give us the local perspective. Thanks!

There is a toll road from DIA to I-25, it can be glorious in the midst of insane traffic, however, there are ways around it.

Pena Blvd to I-225s to I-25.

Otherwise, you won't have tolls.

Stay off E470, Northwest Parkway, and the managed lanes on the Boulder Turnpike and you'll be fine. The tolls on those roads are ridiculously high and rental car companies bend you over a barrel with those stupid convenience fees.

FWIW Pikes Peak is a toll road, too, but they don't have electronic transponders.

The toll road (E-470) is great, assuming you aren't pay the insane rental car fees. Just use Google Maps, and update the settings to "avoid tolls".

Thanks, everyone -- you've reassured us.
BTW, we're native NY'ers who had a very pleasant adjustment when we moved South -- no more paying for every bridge & tunnel needed. You can pay $28 in tolls to get from JFK airport to our son on the Jersey shore. That's 3 bridges & the NJ Turnpike & almost no practical way to avoid it.
