What are the taxes like? Here in NC we have the highest gas tax in the south. We also have to pay taxes on our vehicles even the ones we own every year. We also have to do yearly inspections. They tax everything including food. I know up north such as Michigan they do not tax food.

At the top of each of the forums in Colorado is an index of key threads. Here are the ones about taxes:

I think the gas tax here is something like 40 cents a gallon.

I'm sorry to say that most of the taxes that you mentioned exist here as well. Last time I checked Colorado Springs does tax groceries, but I could be wrong about that -- some other cities in Colorado (i.e., Denver) do not. Fees and taxes for license plate renewal are fairly high and in fact are getting higher as of recently.

On the other hand, property taxes here are among the lowest in the country, and although we do have income taxes (unlike a few states like Wyoming or Nevada), Colorado's income tax rate is the lowest among states that have income tax.

My guess is that in most situations Colorado is going to be more tax friendly than North Carolina, most eastern states for that matter.

Many groceries are not taxed here - depends on what you buy and where. Colorado itself does not tax groceries, but local entities may. Buy your groceries outside of city limits, you might notice a difference. I still notice sometimes going in to a convenience store and buying a food item and paying no tax at all - just exactly what is on the tag.
