We are looking to move from Utah to Montana or Colorado. I am a big swimmer, and am used to lakes and nice indoor pools (Olympic 50 yards)

I see that Evergreen has a nice Rec Center with a 25-yard pool, but does anyone swim in the lake in the summer? It would drive me crazy to see a nice lake and be prohibited from swimming.

I don't recall seeing anyone swimming in this lake.

I know they allow small boating and fishing, and the lake is stocked with fish each year.

The rec district website only mentions the indoor pool facilites for swimming.

I don't think they allow swimming in the lake for some reason. I think it has to do with the size and the dam might have something to do with it

Several factors may be affecting the swimming policy at the lake ....

1) it's very cold water, which risks hypothermia in swimmers
2) it's potable water storage, and there's risks associated with body contact for water quality

We used to jump in the lake in just as quickly as we jumped in get the heck back out - it is really super cold. not to mention you get into a whole bunch of trouble for swimming in the lake.

I think a couple of people died a long time ago in that lake. I think they were pulled over the dam

That wouldn't be surprising. We used to dare one another to see how close we could our boats or paddle boats, we never got close enough to go over (obviously I am here to tell about it) but there were a couple of times we were paddling pretty hard to get out of that current. Stupid kids.

The Lake is used for Water Storage for Evergreen Metro Water District. Yes fish are stocked, elk even wander around the shore line and its a great place for birs. It's very busy in the summer with people coming up from Denver but all in all it's a nice walk.

Yeah, I would bet the dam has more to do with it than anything else. I love going up there on weekend day trips for a walk. (and then ending the day with some pizza at Beaujos (or however it's spelled).

Most people don't swim in lakes in the mountains in Colorado, even if the lake is off-limits as water storage. The exceptions are people who grew up in Canada, Montana, and Wyoming sometimes swim in the lakes. The reason most people don't swim is, the water rarely gets warm enough.
