Safe places for a young mixed woman to live... (Denver: sales, how much)

Hello! I've been trying to find a city I could call home when I graduate. However, I hear that there are many cities here in Colorado that are unfriendly towards people like me. I could use some help finding somewhere where I could feel safe, regardless of how much it costs to live there.

I'll try to give a summary of who I am (as best I can). My name is Imani. I'm a Black-Native American young woman who is currently a second-year college student. I'm an INFP. I enjoy keeping to myself most of the time. I absolutely adore lush forests and greenery; I feel miserable when I'm surrounded by dry grass and dead trees. I feel at home in libraries and museums. I want to have a small garden one day, and perhaps a guard dog. I love playing meditative music and singing. I believe that my purpose here on earth is to ease the suffering of others in my own ways while trying to live a content and peaceful life simultaneously.

As for communities, it'd be nice if I could walk down a street without worrying about getting malicious stares, ya know? Coming from a large family, it'll probably take a bit for me to get used to being alone.

I could really use some help in this situation. I don't want to live worrying about my neighbors, you know?

I'm probably being paranoid...ha ha!

Hi. Do you have a preferred city size? How close to Denver do you want to be? How much winter do you want / can handle?


Not knowing things yet, you might consider these cities:


Durango, Carbondale and Steamboat Springs. All have access to greenery and have small music scenes. Or an established downtown Denver neighborhood. Boulder?

I guess being closer to Denver would be preferable, seeing that my college is there, but I'm mostly focusing on a safe environment. As for winter, I love snow! I prefer warm rains, but snow is the next best thing.

How open-minded are the people in those cities? Boulder sounds pretty nice, but I heard it's really expensive there. ^-^;;;

I guess I'd prefer more diverse places? Meh. lol

I'd say those 3 cities "should" be fairly open-minded. They are well off and more liberal than conservative.


Yes Boulder is expensive (so are the other three) and I almost did not list. Lafayette is near both Boulder and Denver, somewhat cheaper than either and safer than average. Loveland is another option.


Denver has a fairly big African American population, especially in some neighborhoods and far more than elsewhere in state and a modest Native American population.


Are you 1 year resident of state or new transfer student? Just wondering about your direct experience level with state.

I've been living in Colorado for a long time. However, I was born in Virginia. I moved here with my parents a long while ago. We never really went anywhere outside our hometowns, so I'm not sure about the rest of Colorado. I just don't want to live in Reunion anymore. lol

Technically, I could probably find a cheaper place to move into with one of my sisters as a roommate. Having 5 sisters and a brother has its perks! But I'd very much prefer to have my own place. I don't necessarily have to be around people the same as me; I just don't want the false-smile tension that we've experienced in another city that I won't mention.

Nederland, CO. Close enough to Boulder.

Better choices on left coast. CA, OR, and WA all have plenty. Would be 'normal' there, or in several parts of NM or AZ. All have wonderful mtns and many jobs. Most are quite affordable, and not too crowded. Some are low tax, or income, or sales tax free.

I was actually thinking about Washington! I was planning on visiting anyway, so I guess I've got another reason to check it out. I haven't thought about Cali too much; I've been hearing of a drought over there lately, and I shrivel up when surrounded by dry and dead vegetation. lol

Don't know too much about Oregon. ^^;

Colorado is far more brown than Washington, Oregon, Northern California.

Fountain Colorado is a fantastic city for mixed race. It is very common down here. Come check it out!
