It's that time of year again, winds are howling today on the Western Slope, fires will be along soon enough.

They sure are Mike---red flag warning was from yesterday with the winds blowing at a steady 20 m.p.h. Today it's gusting at 40 to 45, been that way from noon till about 4 p.m. Technically, Mesa County has been classified in a drought situation, the Grand Mesa certainly isn't but from the state line to Palisade it is pretty dry all right. Hopefully Colorado Rambler will weigh in regarding what's happening in Montezuma and LaPlata Counties. Hope to hear from Jim 9/2/51 regarding Montrose County.

Can't speak to the Western Slope, but things are outright dangerous right now here in Saguache County and the San Luis Valley in general. Despite being in relatively better shape than we were in 2018, it seems like everyone I know is taking the threat of wildfire more seriously this year than they were in the three years I've been out here. I think the Spring Creek Fire really spooked everyone. I've been working to do some fire mitigation on my property this weekend and will do more in the coming week.

We just need precipitation badly.

The SW corner has been unusually windy for about two weeks already, most days. Also has been much warmer than typical.

It feels like mid-June instead of early May.

When I moved here (Ridgway) on April 23, 2018, it had rained and snowed the night before. After that, nothing for months. I couldn't believe the blasting heat every day. My block hadn't been built yet but was cleared and the ground was so packed that the dogs would pee and it would puddle as if on cement. A dust devil actually hit my house and blew out the screens.

Winter of 2017-2018 was bone dry. The drought continued all the way until late November, and then the snow slammed in with a vengeance. We got a foot in one weekend from that first storm, and this isn’t even ski country.

I’m worried that 2020 will be as bad a drought year as 2018 was. At least we had some carryover water from 2019, but the heat and wind will make short work of it.

Yesterday wasn't too bad in Mesa County but conditions are worrisome IMO. And according to Grand Junction's NBC affiliate KKCO, today a red flag warning goes from Meas County down to the Cortez area.

Ongoing up here in Ridgway area. No sign of relief coming. Wind isn't howling but very sunny and dry. The only home project I have is watering the trees! No sparks there!
