I recently arrived in Colorado 2 years ago and really enjoy the area. I've worked several years as an elementary school counselor. I have good education/experience behind me. I have been mortified to find that there is just not much demand for elementary school counselors (especially in the metro area). It seems to me as though school districts wish to have a PsyD or social worker performing the same services that I have done for several years. Am I reading this correctly?

Could be a financial thing. I rarely read any good fiscal news regarding education these days. It's one bad story (like yours) after another.

I'm sure there are qualified posters (educators, faculty members, school board members) on board here who will have additional info for you.

Lewis Palmer D38 and Falcon D49 are expanding their schools. (These are in the Colorado Springs area.) Perhaps look in these directions.

My wife is PsyD and even she would have a tough time getting a job in a school because she would have to specialize in elementary education (she doesn't).

Default elementary school counselors

Check the Colorado General Assembly website. Along the left menu there is a selection of statutes. If you do a search for professional licenses, perhaps the answer will be there. In general, Colorado funds poorly for counseling and uses school counselors to perform psych testing. They recently passed a law to increase the use of school nurses which formerly were stretched thinly as well.

Yes, it is an interesting situation here for counselors. Thanks for the replies and ideas.
