I read the column, but I'm a little confused. Does the writer live in Columbia? Is he saying it's a great place to visit but he wishes he didn't live there?
Yeah, like CD said, it's a direct challenge to the inferiority complex you'll find among some Columbians (and, perhaps, the superiority complex you'll find among some non-Columbians) who fail to see the ample charms the city has to offer.
Columbia also has a wonderful public library system: Richland County Public Library | Serving Columbia, Ballentine, Blythewood, and Eastover SC I moved here because the cost of living is very reasonable. If you don't have school aged children, there are many areas of the city, particularly downtown, that are wonderful to live in. I love the older neighborhood that we live in even though I have a young child. We just suck it up and send him to a private school but we can afford it because of the cost of living.
Columbia and the Midlands' "backyard playground" is captured in Cowasee Basin: the Green Heart of South Carolina. It's a new book for the coffee table.
This article (brought up in another thread) should get you started: Chernoff: If only I lived in Charleston, or Greenville - Editorial Columns - TheState.com (http://www.thestate.com/2012/02/19/2157376/chernoff-if-only-i-lived-in-charleston.html - broken link)
As for good restaurants and areas, maybe tell us a bit about what you like: In-town or suburbs? New construction or older homes? Types of food you like?
It's 404 on thestate.com and no sign of it anywhere.
Typical for The State to not want to highlight anything positive about Columbia.
