I may be relocating from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia to the Columbia area, specifically for a job at the Columbia VAMC. How are the neighborhoods surrounding the VA and what would you recommend housing-wise between 100k-150k. Also interested in the reputation the Dorn VA has in the area. Thanks for your help!!
There are a number of nice neighborhoods close to the VA Hospital... Old Woodlands, St. Marks Wood, etc. You should be able to find something nearby in that price range. I dont know much about Dorn VA's rep, though.
There are many fantastic neighborhoods in the SE Columbia area. If you want new construction there are some great deals. There is a very high number of military homeowners in SE Columbia because it's convenient the VA hospital and/or Ft. Jackson.
I might also be locating to Columbia for a job at the VA with my family. I am looking at the Wildewood area. Does anyone know if Mountaineer made it? Is Wildewood a good area? Is it a good area for driving to the VA? I also would appreciate any information you can give me on programs for people with disabilities. I have a 25 year old very delightful son with a mild disability. It is always hard to move to a new location and leave friends. Thanks for any replies back.
I don't know if mountaineer made it or not, but I can tell you that Wildewood is a nice area. It is in Northeast Columbia and the VA is in SOutheast. They are not that far apart and the commute would not be that bad. However, there are some great communities in the Southeast as well and some of them are just behind the VA.
The Old Woodlands/Hamptons area of SE Columbia is directly behind the Dorn VA, and it is probably one of the most under-rated neighborhoods in all of Columbia. The neighborhoods have a lot of nice, yet affordable housing, and the area is convenient to interstates, shopping, downtown, USC, Ft. Jackson, Dorn VA, USC Medical School, etc.
You get a ton of "bang for your buck" in the Old Woodlands neighborhood, because you aren't paying as much as some other areas, but you get a lot of benefits.
